Manga Review: Dead Dead Demon’s Dededededestruction V 1 by Inio Asano

May Contain Spoilers

I thought this was bit of a letdown. Aliens have parked a giant spaceship over Japan, and three years later, life goes on. Thousands died on 8/31, and Kadode is struggling to find meaning to her life. Her father disappeared during the first wave of the alien assault, her mother is an emotional and mental wreck, and the future doesn’t have much meaning. Kadode and her friends hang out, play video games, and try to pretend that a big black cloud of doom isn’t hanging over their heads.

Review: Home (Binti #2) by Nnedi Okorafor

May Contain Spoilers

Home picks up a year after the events of the previous novella. Binti and Okwu are attending to their studies at Oomza Uni, where they are both having difficulties adjusting to their new lives. Okwu, warlike and at odds with its instructor, is always a hair trigger away from a violent outburst. Binti, while more successful in her relationships with her professor, is hindered by bursts of blazing rage or moments of pure panic after her experiences with the Meduse on her journey to Oomza Uni. The rages make her feel unclean, because it is not the Himba way, and it’s not the way of a master harmonizer to cause discord. In distress, she decides she needs to return home, face her family, and go on a pilgrimage with other Himba women to cleanse herself. Her journey to find peace is not easy and does not go as planned.

Review: The United States of Japan by Peter Tieryas

May Contain Spoilers

I decided to give United States of Japan a whirl because of the mecha on the cover.  I thought this would be an action adventure type read in an alternate US.  While there are mecha fighting scenes and shoot outs between the protagonists and the bad guys, it’s more of a hard-boiled, gritty mystery.  Set in a grim alternate history where the Japanese and the Germans win WWII, the story is broken up in three primary time periods;  1948, 1988, and 1978.  The chapters featuring Beniko’s parents were my favorite.  Starting with the restoration of freedom from the Japanese internment camps after the Japanese win the war, the Japanese begin to shape the western US into their vision of a Japanese territory.  Forty years later, the totalitarian government is firmly in place, along with government censors, secret police, and horrible atrocities committed on the populace to keep rebels and dissidents, real and imagined,  firmly in check.
