Meet Mick Kilpatrick from Christine Bell & Riley Murphy’s White Lie Christmas

[Manga Maniac Cafe]  Good morning, Mick!  Can you please describe yourself in five words or less.

[Mick Kilpatrick] Loyal, decisive, romantic, fun and compassionate.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you share a typical day in the life of Mick Kilpatrick?

[Mick Kilpatrick] Sure, but I’m not going to sugarcoat this. Most days are pretty boring unless I have Luke. That’s my son and when I’m hanging out with him it’s like the best of stormy days. Suddenly nothing is predictable and every thing’s exciting and fresh. Like I’m seeing the world through new eyes. Kind of like when I’m with Leah. Except she’s more the warm sunshine after the storm. That’s her. After all the rain you never know if it will appear, but when it does? It’s something to see.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words come to mind when you think of Leah?

[Mick Kilpatrick] Big-hearted. Does that count as two words? Quirky and perfect for me. Yeah, shoot me. I went over the word count, but if you knew Leah the way I do you’d understand that three words aren’t enough to describe how amazing she is. *clears throat* I mean, as a friend. Everyone should have a friend like Leah. Next question?

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How on earth did she convince you to pretend to be her fiancé?

[Mick Kilpatrick] To tell you the truth, I don’t think she did much convincing. She was in a bind—sorry about the grin, but when she’s in a jam she gets this look. Hard to describe—she’d kill me if she heard me say this—but the expression reminds me of Jenny. Jen was the big yellow lab I grew up with and every time she did something she wasn’t supposed to she’d give me those puppy-dog eyes. Oh, don’t look at me like that. This is legit. There’s actually a scientific reason why Leah’s expression gets to me. It triggers a release of the so-called “trust hormone” oxytocin according researchers. Look it up. I did. *looks away and mumbles* Not that I was worried about it or anything. *looks back* Anyway, it’s that kind of look. Gets me every time. But here’s the deal. Leah doesn’t do it because she’s trying to get off the hook for doing something wrong. It’s just the opposite as she’s usually trying to save someone’s feelings or fix something for someone she loves. Unfortunately, sometimes despite her good intentions things backfire. And you know, what kind of man would I be if I didn’t help her out during those times? Yeah, now that I think about it, maybe I should have added protector to the list on your first question because while she’s got everyone else’s back, I’ll always have hers.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you could change one thing you’ve done in your life, what would it be?

[Mick Kilpatrick] My knee-jerk response is to say to have not gotten married because my divorce was so tough on my son, but if I’d never gotten married, I’d never have had Luke in the first place. So, honestly? Nothing. I have a great business and an awesome business partner in Leah, an amazing kid, and a decent co-parenting relationship with my ex. I wouldn’t change anything I’ve done because maybe that would change where I am now. And where I am now is perfect. Almost. If only Leah…*scrubs hand over face* Yeah, nothing. It’s all good.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What’s one thing you won’t leave home without?

[Mick Kilpatrick] My cell phone in case my son needs me, or in case Leah calls with another “emergency”.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How do you relax after a hard day pretending to be a devoted fiancé?

[Mick Kilpatrick] A cold beer, try to catch a Blackhawks game on the TV, and then usually? A long, cold shower. I can’t lie. Being a fake fiancé is hard, in more ways than one.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you share your dreams for the future in five words or less.

[Mick Kilpatrick] Busting out of the friend-zone.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!

ISBN: 9781622664191

Book Description:

The holidays are here, and Leah Latrelle has made a mess of them. When her out-of-town parents’ concern over her non-existent love life threatens to interfere with her father’s health, she invents a boyfriend who quickly turns into a fiancé. Her family is thrilled, and they change their Christmas plans last minute to meet their future son-in-law. Now Leah has no choice but to come up with the goods. She needs a man, fast. When her friend and business partner, Mick, offers himself up as a sacrifice, she’s all over it. He’s handsome, dependable and available for the job.

What could go wrong?

Tis the season, and Mick Kilpatrick can’t say no to a damsel in distress. Especially when that damsel is his luscious business partner who has been the object of his reluctant desire for the past year. He hasn’t pursued anything because being a dad is still priority number one. A sexy woman like Leah will only distract him from what’s really important and he can’t have that. He’ll pretend to be her fiancé, but when it’s over, everything will go back to normal. Sure, he’s fantasized about her once or…a million times but that doesn’t mean he’s in love with her. Does it?

About the Authors:

Christine Bell

Christine Bell was born and raised in Connecticut, where she spent most of her childhood outdoors catching salamanders, frogs and colds. When she wasn’t terrorizing Mother Nature, she was curled up under the covers with her nose in a book. As an adult, she’s stopped stalking amphibians, but still loves books. When she isn’t reading, she likes to spend her time people-watching. In fact, she’s probably watching you RIGHT NOW .

She’s also pretty obsessed with writing YA books, but if she had to pick another profession she would be a ninja…or a Professor of the Dark Arts.

Riley Murphy

Hmm… about me. You know? I had a whole list of things to talk about. How I’m an artist, a university graduate, I was a stay-at-home mom who’d been president of condo associations, home owners associations and PTAs, but once the kids were grown, I became an entrepreneur who built and ran two successful businesses….and right there I stopped. What does all this stuff have to do with my writing career?

Oh sure that was the external fuel that got me to this point in life, but it’s the internal stuff that matters, right? So, about me? Here’s what’s important. I’m a wife, a mother, a daughter and a sibling in that order. I’ve been married to the same man for twenty-five years and I still get a thrill when he walks in the room. I have two children who -if they weren’t my kids- I’d be proud to call them friends. I have an elderly parent who lives with me now and I feel fortunate to be in a position to gracefully accept the responsibility of my mom’s care. And I have siblings. All of whom understand the journey I’m on and support it.

In a nutshell? My life has always been centered around the people I love. Just as my writing is centered around the characters I adore. I’ve waited a long time to for this and I can’t tell you how happy I am to be here.

I hope you like my guys as much as I do. They really are so bad – they’re good!
