Interview with Carly Drake, Author of Words Once Spoken

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Welcome, Carly! Can you please describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Carly Drake] Lover of creative challenges, paper and things written on them, too sarcastic for my own good, boot obsessed, & fond of many things UK/Irish

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Words Once Spoken?

[Carly Drake] The story is a YA Paranormal Fantasy, set in Medieval England. As the daughter of a feudal lord, Evelyn is destined to be married off like a prized cow, however she prefers the comforts of the woods, her bow & arrow, and trousers to the confines of four walls, dresses, and balls.  When her family takes her to the princess’s coming out gala she comes across a young noble who is almost as strange as she is.  Through him she learns of the predatory fey, the vampires and werewolves they created with a curse, and her own blood-filled past. Words Once Spoken refers to the fact that once a spell or curse is cast only the caster can revoke what was done. It is the first in a three book series.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Carly Drake] Last year I was trying to find a cheap, easy, and last minute costume for a Halloween party.  I already had an archery set, and some rugged boots, so I decided to be Katniss.  I then began to imagine a female character who would need to use such weapons, and I have always wanted to write a book about the fey, so things just took off from there.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had a theme song, what would it be?

[Carly Drake] Ha! That changes every few weeks! Right now its Ellie Goulding’s cover of "Tesselate."

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing  you won’t leave home without.

[Carly Drake] My phone.  It sounds silly, but it has all of my Kindle books on it, and if I get an idea I can write it down in a note. If I can not have a book or notebook with me, this is my next best option to have both.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Carly Drake] My laptop, a mug of tea or glass of water, and either my notebook or a stack of books for reference/inspiration.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Carly Drake] Even though I’m an avid reader, I haven’t read anything in a while that has truly blown me away. I would have to say JK Rowling’s "The Cuckoo’s Calling." I read it this past July.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Carly Drake] Ooooooo, that’s a hard one, because I’ve always been a big reader. I think "The Little House on the Prairie" might have been the first series I read, and I loved it. I remember reading that one and several others over and over.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Carly Drake] If I’m not reading or writing I’m looking for other good mediums of the craft in tv shows, movies, and plays.  I also perform at my community theater and take lessons.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Carly Drake] Twitter: @endlessbindings

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!

About the book:

YA meets high fantasy in this lush series debut about a girl who never quite fit in — and the reason why…

Evelyn might not love the confines of her village life, but she takes her small freedoms where she can get them. But everything changes when her parents decide it’s time for her to wed. Suddenly she loses her tunic and breeches, her bow, her horse, and gains rigid gowns, restrictive manners, and carriage rides.

The best way to escape is through her dreams, but as they become more and more real, Evelyn begins to worry that she is losing her grasp on reality. It is only when she makes two new friends that the truth is revealed: she is destined for far, far more than even she could imagine.
