Meet Hattie Blackhouse from Anne Cleeland’s Daughter of the God-King and Giveaway!

[Manga Maniac Café] Good morning, Hattie! Can you please describe yourself in five words or less.

[Hattie Blackhouse]  Well, I wish I were taller, so I supposed you would say I am petite. I am also determined, resilient, a bit naïve, perhaps, but practical, too.

[Manga Maniac Café] Can you share a typical day in the life of Hattie Blackhouse?

[Hattie Blackhouse]  Before I set sail for Egypt, my days in Cornwall were completely tedious; aside from the Tremaine family on the neighboring estate, I hardly knew anyone and I never went anywhere.

Then I went to search for my missing parents in Egypt, and now every day is suddenly filled with mystery and danger. Why is the French Consul behaving as though he is a suitor, even though he is thirty years my senior? Who is the gentleman watching my house, and why did he advise me to depart for home with all speed? And most of all, why would my parents’ handsome agent be searching my bedchamber—and fighting the attraction that obviously exists between us? After all, if my parents are no longer among the living, I’m a considerable heiress.

I beg your pardon; I’m digressing. In short, after I left Cornwall I no longer have typical days, nor typical acquaintances.

[Manga Maniac Café] Can you describe your relationship with your parents?

[Hattie Blackhouse]  I would if I knew them well, but unfortunately, I don’t. They are world-famous, of course, and since the tombs of the pharaohs are necessarily in the Valley of the Kings, I didn’t see them much, growing up.

I rather hoped when I turned eighteen they’d send for me to join them on their excursions, but instead I received the unwelcome news that they were missing, last seen at their most recent dig, the tomb of the god-king’s daughter.

[Manga Maniac Café] Do you share their fascination with all things Egyptian?

[Hattie Blackhouse]  No. Truth be told, I rather resented Egypt because it kept my parents away. And I’ll never understand the fascination—it was forty centuries ago, for the love of heaven.

[Manga Maniac Café]  If you could change one thing you’ve done in your life, what would it be?

[Hattie Blackhouse]  I’ve never done anything—well, before now, of course. I wish I’d had more choices, I suppose. I’ve always longed to travel and see the world, but as an under-aged female, I was forced to stay home and await events. Now events have caught up with me with a vengeance.

[Manga Maniac Café] What’s one thing you won’t leave home without?

[Hattie Blackhouse]  My sun bonnet. I tend to get quite brown in the sun, and it is far too hot in Egypt.

[Manga Maniac Café] What do you like to do when you aren’t searching for your missing parents?

[Hattie Blackhouse]  I do enjoy sailing—I’d never done, before. And spending time with my parents’ agent, of course—even though he doesn’t seem to know very much about their life’s work, which seems a bit strange.

[Manga Maniac Café] Can you share your dreams for the future in five words or less.

[Hattie Blackhouse]  I wanted to marry the boy next door, but unfortunately he’s betrothed—although the circumstances are a bit smoky, if you were to ask me. So—let’s say “survive kidnap attempts and marry someone else.” That’s too many words, though. Did I mention that my parents’ agent is rather handsome?

[Manga Maniac Café] Thank you!
