I love fairy tales, so it should come as no surprise that retellings of fairy tales always get a nod from me. The Thirteenth Princess by Diane Zahler recasts the twelve dancing princesses with an additional princess, Zita, who has been banished by the king to the servants’ quarters.
“A storm had come unexpected upon the palace, and my sister were out in their boats, three pretty rowboats painted pastel yellow, green, and blue. The sky above the lake was black with clouds, and the lake was black too, its waters whipped into waves that lashed the sides of the boats as the girls clutched one another and shrieked in fear.” (page 47)
Ristorante Paradiso by Natsume Ono is a quiet, reflective tale about a young woman, her stormy relationship with her mother, and a small Italian restaurant. It is so good!
“Two brothers falling for the same woman, huh? There are so many shapes to love.” (page 100)
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
- Grab your current read
- Open to a random page
- Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
- BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
- Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
