May Contain Spoilers
After the fierce battle in the Forest of the Witches, Vanessa is released by her mother. The Queen then gives up a magic stone, as well as an info dump about the Eye of the Midnight Sun, some powerful elves who were obliterated from the face of the planet, and shares with Asta a rumor about his anti-magic swords. Then the gang goes back to headquarters, triumphant from their mission. Not bad for a day’s work!
Yami informs them that everyone’s on a break for the upcoming Star Festival. The Wizard King will be awarding stars to the Knight Brigades, and everyone can have a little fun. Because the Black Bulls are always in last place, nobody expects any different from them, and the pressure is off Yami. Right?
Not so fast! Thanks to Asta’s untiring service, the Black Bulls actually earn their highest ranking – ever! Yami isn’t really pleased at first, because, you know, it’s easier being a screw up then having people actually expect that your team will produce results. The King is a jerk, Asta and Yuno have to once again prove that they are just as worthy as those noble-born, and general chaos reigns.
This was a nice break from all the heavy storylines and doom and gloom of the series. Booze flows, people you don’t expect over-indulge, and some of the characters show that they don’t have the best taste in the opposite sex. Then Mereoleona of the Crimson Lions drags everyone off for a training mission, because the King is going to host a tournament soon and choose a select team of royal knights.
There’s not much story advancement in this volume, but I didn’t care. It was fun to see everyone cut loose, both for better and worse. All of the knights are flawed, flawed, flawed, except for maybe Yuno, and their petty grievances and inner fighting made for an entertaining festival.
