Manga Review: The Promised Neverland V 4 by Kaiu Shirai & Posuka Demizu @vizmedia @shonenjump

May Contain Spoilers

Holy guacamole, this is such a great series! Four volumes in and it’s only getting more suspenseful. Grace Field House is harboring a chilling secret; the orphans living there are being raised as food – for monsters! I don’t normally enjoy dark horror stories, but The Promised Neverland hits it out of the park with incredible art, fast-pacing, and on the edge of your seat suspense. This volume featured so many plot twists my head is spinning!

Mom has discovered that Ray, Emma, and Norman are planning to escape with the other kids, so she takes action. She breaks Emma’s leg, ensuring that she can’t run away. Ouch! What a heartless witch! With no other choice, Norman surrenders himself on his birthday, and goes off meekly with Mom to his horrid fate. Since Norman is one of the smartest kids at Grace Field House, he has one of the tastiest brains, and Mom is scoring a huge victory by turning him over to the monsters.

I don’t want to give away any more of the plot. Volume 4 had me on pins and needles. Crushed at losing one of her best friends, Emma loses her will to fight. She and Ray spend the next two months ignoring each other, both feeling guilty that they couldn’t save Norman, and blaming each other for their failures. Now it’s Ray’s twelfth birthday. Will Emma lose yet another friend?

I love this series. I need to make a better effort to keep up on volumes, then then again, if I fall behind, I just have more darkly suspenseful books to binge on. Mom is a formidable foe, but  despite her own craftiness, she grossly underestimated the cunning of her valuable charges. I hope her downfall is swift, but I doubt the kids will be rid of her quite so easily. And I am dying to know – what is the world like on the other side of the wall??

Grade: 4.75 stars
