Manga Review: Kuroko’s Basketball Omnibus V 8 (15 & 16) by Tadatoshi Fujimaki @shonenjump

May Contain Spoilers

Oh, boy! The game against To-oh continues! Kuroko’s misdirection skills are useless against this powerhouse team. Kagami can’t keep up with Aomine one on one, and things are looking grim for Seirin. Have they come this far, only to lose their bid to be the best basketball team in Japan?

The Winter Cup is not getting off to a great start for Seirin. To-oh is a formidable team, the toughest they have faced so far. Nothing seems to be working, and they are helpless to stop the growing lead To-oh has taken over them. As their will to win goes on life support, Kagami refuses to give up. But the point gap is huge! Argh!

Most of this double volume is taken up by the To-oh game. It is never-ending, but that is not a bad thing. I think the art has improved since the first volume, and the competition on the court is a joy to behold. The illustrations are exciting, the play is fast-paced, and this is a fun series to read. I’m glad Viz made the decision to release these in omnibus format, because the waits between new volumes would be agonizing. Almost every volume ends on a cliffhanger, so having two books at once is appreciated.

Everything about this installment worked for me except Alex, Kagami’s basketball coach from America, and the tired joke that Riko is a terrible cook. I get it, she can barely boil water, but it’s time to retire that particular gag.

Grade: 4.25 stars

About the book:

Seirin High’s greatest basketball superstar was the one no one literally saw coming—the invisible Kuroko!
Tetsuya Kuroko doesn’t stand out much. In fact, he’s so plain that people hardly ever notice when he’s around. Though he’s just as unremarkable on the basketball court, that’s where his plainness gives him an unexpected edge—one that lets him execute awesome moves without others noticing!
It’s the third quarter of Seirin’s game against To-oh, and the team faces a tough time when Momoi’s strategies nullify Kuroko’s effectiveness. His misdirection is failing, and Aomine’s unbelievable skills are leaving Seirin in the dust… Now all hopes for victory rest on Kuroko’s ultimate move!
