Teaser Tuesday–Immortal Hope and Time Out

Okay, I took one look at this hottie and wanted to know more about Immortal Hope by Claire Ashgrove.  And learn more about the guy.  Like where is the rest of his chain mail? If he is attacked by demons, his beautiful body will be marred!

Declan’s wound gaped wide, exposing white bone beneath. He groaned as Merrick and Farran eased him onto the fresh linens of a newly made bed within the infirmary.  Merrick squeezed the Scott’s good shoulder. Though the tear in Declan’s flesh was bad, Merrick had seen worse.

When I saw Jill Shalvis’ new Harlequin Blaze, I had to read it.  Like RIGHT. THIS. SECOND.  I even let it take cuts, despite the massive guilt I feel for dissing my other, more seasoned reads.  Why? The hero is a coach in the NHL.  I love hockey!  I’m from Red Wing country, so I guess it’s inherited.

"Trust me, he’s not your type.”

“Because he’s rich and famous? Because he’s tough as hell and cool as ice?”

“Because he’s missing a vital organ.”

Lena gasped in horror.  “He doesn’t have a d-“

“A heart! He’s missing a heart! Jeez, get your mind out the gutter.”

Teaser Tuesday-Katana and Shatter Me

I am really enjoying Katana by Cole Gibson.  Though a disconnect from reality is needed to make this work, it is a fun blend of action, romance, and suspense.  Perfect for fans of popcorn movies.

I saw one of my eyes-large, blue, and serene-reflected in the blade as it came toward my face. I wondered if everyone felt so at peace right before they died.  I closed my eyes and waited for…I wasn’t sure exactly.  I hoped it wouldn’t hurt.

I put a hold on Shatter Me by Tehereh Mafi at the library, and amazingly, a copy came in just a few days after.  This is a short loan book, so I have to read it quickly. The pressure!  I have heard that this is a book that you either love or you hate, so I am curious to see which camp I will fall into. Here are the first sentences.

I’ve been locked up for 264 days.

I have nothing but a small notebook and a broken pen and the numbers in my head to keep my company. 1 window. 4 walls. 144 square feet of space. 26 letters in an alphabet I haven’t spoken in 264 days of isolation.

Teaser Tuesday–Fracture and May B

I picked up Fracture by Megan Miranda on New Year’s Eve. I stayed up late reading it, and finished it on New Year’s Day. This is a very compelling novel, and it was glued to my hands. I could not put it down! It reminded me of one of my favorite 2011 reads, The Vision by Jen Nadol.

But I felt her watching me while I ate my turkey sub.  I didn’t know whether she was staring at me because I used to look a lot different or whether she was staring at me because I used to be dead.

May B by Caroline Starr Rose is a very gripping tale of survival.  I can’t believe that everyone May depended on has abandoned her and left her to fend for herself.

Miss Sanders told us that lines never end, and number go on forever.

Here,

in short-grass country,

I understand infinity.

Teaser Tuesday–The Book of Wonders and A Lady Awakened

Naturally, I finally get some time away from work to read, and I end up getting sick.  I spent most of the holiday weekend sleeping, though I did occasionally feel like reading in short spurts.  I  polished off Cinder by Marissa Meyer, which is a very compelling retelling of Cinderella.  I enjoyed it very much, and eagerly look forward to the next installment of the series.

Then I picked up The Book of Wonders by Jasmine Richards, which is a Middle-Grade novel with an Arabian Nights feel.  I liked this from the get-go, and can hardly wait to see what kind of adventures Zardi and Rhidan stumble across.

Ninety days. Blood flowed over Zardi’s teeth as she bit down on her tongue to stop herself crying out. Ninety days until the Hunt.

Oh, my!  I haven’t read anything at all like A Lady Awakened by Cecilia Grant.  This  is very engrossing, and I am having a hard time putting it down.  I guarantee that you haven’t read a Regency like this before!

In its place welled up that same dismay she’d known on her first viewing, some ten months past, of a naked man.  Whose idea of good design was this? Why those awkward angles, and what could be the necessity for all that hair?

Teaser Tuesday–Saga of the Sioux and Obsidian

I waited very impatiently for Saga of the Sioux by Dwight Jon Zimmerman to arrive at my local library.   I have always been interested in Native American culture and history, and when I saw this adaptation of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, it went immediately on my wish list.  This passage is from the Introduction.

Today it is difficult, if no impossible, to understand how these people could have done what they did and feel no shame.  But that’s what happened-and not to just one tribe or nation.  As Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee revealed, from sea to shining sea, it happened to them all.

The other book I am finishing up is Obsidian by Jennifer L Armentrout.  This is a fun, fast-paced read with lots of clever dialog and snappy prose.

Her eyes went from me to Daemon, completely misinterpreting everything.  The glee in her eyes made me want to vomit on Daemon’s head. “You live next door?”

Teaser Tuesday–Rival and Bleeding Hearts

I had a bunch of holds come in from the library, so I am trying to fit as many of them into my reading schedule as possible. The first one I picked up was Rival by Sara Bennett Wealer. After reading Virtuosity by Jessica Martinez, I was craving another story with a competitive music backdrop.  So far, this is really good.

“Hey, Kathryn! Catch!” A beach ball hits me in the chest and then plops into my lap.  I look up to see Brooke’s older brother Brice bobbing in the water in front of me.

My other read is Bleeding Hearts by Alyxandra Harvey.  It’s about the Drakes.   I adore the Drakes.  There is nothing else to be said.

Nicholas won’t even sit in the same car with me because the smell of warm human blood is still too tempting.  He just turned a little over a year ago, and it takes time to get all those appetites under control.  I think of it like a case of perpetual PMS, where you just feel inside your bones that if you don’t get a hot fudge sundae right away, you might actually kill someone.

Teaser Tuesday–Busted in Bollywood and In The Forests of The Night

I picked up Busted in Bollywood by Nicola Marsh this weekend, and so far, I am finding this breezy contemporary a fun read.   I am having a problem with all of the references to Indian food, though – I desperately want to hit the closest Indian buffet because the book is making me hungry!

His smile turned sly.  “Besides, I have a reputation to uphold.  It wouldn’t be good for me to be seen interfering in women’s work.”

Women’s work?  You little worm, you-“

“Gotcha.” He had the audacity to wink and I deflated.

I also started In The Forests of Then Night by Kersten Hamilton, and about 2 pages in, I didn’t want to put it down!  I enjoyed Tyger Tyger quite a bit despite a slow beginning, and this follow-up has me hooked already!

“I need to speak to Roisin,” he said.

Finn rubbed his jaw.  “Then I suggest you get off my girl’s lap. And put some clothes on, man.  You’re indecent.”

Teaser Tuesday–Shaedes of Gray and Lightbringer

I didn’t get much reading accomplished last week because I was on vacation, but I have been making steady (even though it’s a little slow) progress on two books.  Shaedes of Gray by Amanda Bonilla is an urban fantasy with a heroine every bit as tough as she looks on the cover.  I would not want to get on Darian’s bad side!

In a rage, I took the katana and sliced clean through a watermelon.  It rested on the kitchen counter undisturbed. If not for the juice bleeding from the line in the rind, you wouldn’t have known I’d cut it at all.

I started reading Lightbringer by K D McEntire on the airplane during one of those “Turn off anything with an On/Off switch” moments.  It’s pretty good, too.

Inside, Piotr was met with anxious, pale faces. Tubs, clinging to Piotr’s duster, huddled behind Dora, and Specs peered past splintery boards to the courtyard below. Piotr wanted to soothe them, to swear they were safe, but he didn’t want to lie.  Instead he remained silent.
