She’s totally off limits, but this rocker wants a taste…

Interview with Madelynne Ellis, Author of Come Undone

Please welcome Madelynne Ellis to the virtual offices this morning.  She dropped by to chat about her latest release Come Undone.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or  less.

[Madelynne Ellis] The quiet one, who listens and doesn’t say much.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Come  Undone?

[Madelynne Ellis] Come Undone is the first in a series of books that explore the relationship between Dani Fosbrook, a university student with Xane Geist, the frontman of an internationally famous goth metal band called Black Halo. (I’ve also plans for other members of the band, but I’m trying not to get ahead of myself.) Come Undone covers the first few critical days of Xane and Dani’s relationship, which happen to coincide with Xane announcing the band’s demise.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Madelynne Ellis] I’m never entirely sure where my characters come from. They mostly arrive, tell me there names, and I learn about them as I write. I did know I wanted to write about an extreme metal band and the dynamics within such a group.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Dani?

[Madelynne Ellis] Insecure. Loyal. Survivor.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Xane had a theme song, what would it  be?

[Madelynne Ellis] I really, really want to say something loud and raucous, much like the sort of music Xane likes to write and perform, but actually, it’s Come Undone by Robbie Williams.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Dani is never without.

[Madelynne Ellis] Clothing. She really doesn’t like being exposed.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Xane’s bathroom?

[Madelynne Ellis] Hairspray, Ash’s underwear (Black Halo’s lead guitarist) and anything pink or frilly.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Dani’s greatest regret?

[Madelynne Ellis] Losing contact with her father.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Madelynne Ellis] I’m not sure I have any very specific ones. I tend to mine ideas from all over the place. I have a bit of a fangirl crush on Gackt, does that count?

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Madelynne Ellis] 1) Writing implement, laptop out of preference but I’ve been known to write on toilet tissue using eyeliner pencil. 2) Silence, if at all possible and 3) A large cup of decaf coffee.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What was your biggest distraction while working on Come Undone?

[Madelynne Ellis] Watching clips of rock bands and music videos, but it was research, honest.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Madelynne Ellis] It’s not often that a book grabs hold of me and won’t let go anymore. I think being a writer makes it harder to read without analysing the work at the same time. Probably either Silent in the Sanctuary by Deanna Raybourn or Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Madelynne Ellis] Finally, an easy question :) That would be The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien. I’ve adored that book since I was about thirteen.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Madelynne Ellis] Roleplay, both tabletop and live, read and watch DVDs.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Madelynne Ellis] By using any of the following:

or by email madelynne at madelynne-ellis dot com

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!

About the book:

On stage he’s dynamite. Off stage he rocks her world.
When red-hot, Goth-metal band, Black Halo, split live on stage, fate throws Daniella Fosbrook into the path of sexy vocalist Xane Geist. Initially, Xane’s only looking for a ride home, but Dani tempts him in a way a thousand other women haven’t. Determined to explore their heady chemistry and avoid hashing things out with the band, Xane whisks Dani off to Monaco for a steamy weekend.
There, Dani tries her best to hang onto her heart and some clothing, while Xane soon loses both. However, Xane isn’t being entirely honest about the reason for the band’s demise. When the truth comes out, can Dani accept the facts, or will everything come undone.

Book 1 in the NA rock star series, Lost in Oblivion
Coming in September

Onstage he’s Demon, the unsurpassable bassist.
Offstage he’s the Peacemaker, the mastermind who keeps his volatile band from imploding.
Opening for their idols on their first ever tour, Oblivion is living the dream. That dream becomes a nightmare when Oblivion draws more attention than the headliner and egos clash. Frustrated at being shoved out of his mediator role by their new manager, Deacon McCoy loses himself in brutal workouts only coming up for air long enough to refuel—and that means hunting down the catering truck at odd hours.
Especially the deliciously cute chef who excites his taste buds as much as his body.
The child of roadie parents, Harper Pruitt has heard every pickup line twice. To her, musicians are one step above the scraps on her cutting board. All she wants is to get enough experience to run her own catering company, but Deacon and his bottomless and surprisingly gourmet stomach is too tempting to resist. Before long, she finds herself wanting to experiment with him outside the kitchen.
When Harper sees that Deacon’s sense of responsibility is doing him serious damage, she realizes he’s far from the typical rock star. But as the band’s fame grows, she wonders if she can love a man who doesn’t know how to let anyone in—even her.
You met Deacon McCoy in SEDUCED, now you can watch just how far a big man can fall.

Meet Jake Olsen from Robyn Thomas’ Famously Engaged and Giveaway!

We have a special guest in the virtual offices this morning!  Rocker hottie Jake Olsen from Robyn Thomas’ Famously Engaged dropped in for a visit, so please give him a warm welcome.

[Manga Maniac Café] Describe yourself in five words or less.

[Jake Olsen] Only five? I’m accustomed to being the ‘mouth’ of Five Awesome Emperors and talking us up in interview situations, so limiting my answer will be a challenge. I’d have to say: caged, ambitious, loyal, itinerant and overconfident.

[Manga Maniac Café] Can you share a typical day in the life of Jake Olsen?

[Jake Olsen] There is no pattern to my days. They start early, finish late and usually involve some combination of the following: long distance travel, public appearances, radio interviews, video and photo shoots, working out, recording, performing and song writing. If all five Emperors are in the same city, and our schedule can be twisted to accommodate it, I get the band together for a quick jam session.

[Manga Maniac Café] What three words come to mind when you think of Beth?

[Jake Olsen] Beth is essential, admirable, strong and grounded. (Did I mention that I can’t count?)

[Manga Maniac Café] What do you find most exasperating about her?

[Jake Olsen] Beth’s loyalty to her ex-husband drives me CRAZY. Their divorce failed to break the bond between them and his upcoming wedding shows no sign of succeeding either. I can’t understand why she’d settle for his company when she has access to me 24/7.

[Manga Maniac Café] If you could change one thing you’ve done in your life, what would it be?

[Jake Olsen] I wouldn’t change a thing. I carried around some hefty regrets before I met Beth, but every bad decision and foolish mistake I ever made combined to lead me to her doorstep. Music is important to me, but I could always write songs for other people, tour with a different band or pursue a solo career. Beth is my weakness, my strength and my reason for living. I can’t imagine a life better than the one I share with Beth, so I have no desire to change anything.

[Manga Maniac Café] Thank you!

Interview with Aimée Duffy, author of Never Say Never

Please welcome Aimée Duffy to the virtual offices today. She is celebrating the release of Never Say Never, and she brought along a short excerpt for you to enjoy.  Check out what she has to say!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Aimée] Manic reader, compulsive shoe shopper and closet Dr Who fan—oops.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Never Say Never?

[Aimée] Singer and reality television presenter, Sander Chase is being forced into going to his ex-fiancé’s engagement party. He bribes a waitress, Chloe Butler, from his local coffee shop to go with him. Part of the deal is spending enough time together to be photographed around London.

He’s too busy to date for real, and Chloe has a bad history dating celebrities, so they are not looking for anything more. Unfortunately they’re also very attracted to each other and fighting to keep their hands to themselves is harder than it should be, especially since Sander has a dark secret that means there can’t possibly be any future for them.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Aimée] Sander is one of the judges on the reality singing competition Do You Have What it Takes? in book 1, The Monster of Fame. I already had a rough idea of who he was, and what he didn’t need in his life—a relationship.

Chloe is his perfect and worst match, all rolled into one. She has the beauty to reel him in, the backbone to put him in his place and the smarts to keep him interested—which in his opinion makes her dangerous.

The story isn’t set during the show. I wanted to make the book readable as a standalone or a follow up to The Monster of Fame, so Sander and Chloe are completely separate from the other characters, although the heroine from The Monster of Fame does make an appearance.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Chloe?

[Aimée] Stubborn, compassionate, loyal.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Sander had a theme song, what would it be?

[Aimée] Green Day’s, Boulevard of Broken Dreams. He’d probably disagree, but it suits his past.

[Manga Maniac Café] Name one thing Chloe is never without.

[Aimée] Her cell phone, but only because her mum’s ill and she needs to be contacted easily.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Sander’s bathroom?

[Aimée] Anything pink.

Fancy soaps.

Hair spray.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Chloe’s greatest regret?

[Aimée] Moving to LA after college.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Aimée] Gossip magazines. It’s amazing what the mind comes up with when reading about famous people’s lives.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Aimée] Music, a comfy seat and Wikipedia

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Aimée] Tempted by Trouble, by Michelle Smart.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Aimée] Of Mice and Men, or the Goosebumps series. Probably the latter.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Aimée] Shop. When it’s not raining, I love to go hillwalking. Way cheaper than letting me loose with my credit card.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Aimée] Website

[Manga Maniac Café] Thank you!

About the book:

When pretend turns to desire, heartbreak is unavoidable.

Sander Chase needs a date for his ex-fiancée’s engagement party, but he doesn’t have time for a woman in his life. Between working on the TV show Do You Have What It Takes? and his band reforming, he’s too busy for a relationship. What he needs is a pretend girlfriend. He thinks he may have found the perfect woman for the job, and the bribe he offers means she’s sure to accept.

After losing her job in the film industry, breaking up with her movie star boyfriend, and finding out her mum has dementia, Chloe Butler returned to the UK determined to put her life back together. The last thing she needs is to parade around London on the arm of a celebrity, and after the heartbreak caused by her ex, she swore she’d never again date a star. But when Sander offers her a chance at her dream job, it’s not something she can turn down.

As Chloe gets to know Sander she learns he’s nothing like her scumbag ex. But she struggles to fight her attraction to him, knowing their relationship is only for show and their separation date is closing in fast.

Ignoring the insane chemistry between them should be easy for Sander, especially since he carries a secret that means there can be no future for them, but the more time he spends with Chloe, the harder it is to keep his hands to himself.

Content Warning: contains more denial than you’ll find in a courtroom, more sexual tension than most people could handle, and explosive sex that some readers may find long overdue.

About the author:

Aimée writes steamy, contemporary romance for the 21st century woman who enjoys the 21st century alpha male. She’s addicted to reading, shopping and can’t go a day without music. When she’s not writing you can find her traipsing up the Ochils (weather permitting of course) or procrastinating on Facebook and Twitter.

Chloe Butler’s mouth dropped open. She struggled to remember how to close it as she stared at the man with the expectant expression on his avenging angel face. She couldn’t have heard him right. Sander Chase would never ask someone like her out on a date.

“Excuse me?”

He flashed his Hollywood smile. “Come on. Don’t make a guy ask twice.”

Nope, she’d not misheard him, nor had she gone mad. Months of serving him coffee and this was the first time he’d shown any kind of interest in her.

“I’m sorry.” She retreated a few steps. She couldn’t date a celebrity, not after what happened the last time. She was just beginning to get her life back together. Not to mention the fact her mum needed her around more than ever. “I can’t. Thank you for the offer.”

Chloe tried to smile politely, but it was harder than usual. She turned to head back to the counter to get on with her work. If her boss Richard caught her talking to a celebrity, he’d get the wrong idea and hand her a P45 before she could explain. After all, the coffee shop was a classy place. Not even the press were allowed in.

A large, warm hand ensnared her wrist and drew her to a halt. Electrified jolts shot up her arm from the contact.

“Can’t or don’t want to?”

She turned back to Sander and saw his brow was raised and amusement glittered in his baby blue eyes. Pushy, wasn’t he?

“Don’t want to,” she replied, determined not to give him any hope.

Can’t left wiggle room, and there was definitely no wiggle room. She’d sworn off men after the last one had taken her for a mug.

Her reply seemed to please him. His grin grew huge and her heart sped. She frowned at the reaction and put it down to the stress of the situation. After all, as far as she was concerned, her libido was extinct.

“That’s perfect.”

Was he mad? From her experience, celebrities could be a little…odd. But she’d never met a full-blown lunatic before. “I’m sorry, I don’t know what you mean.”

Why wasn’t she backing away? Better yet, why wasn’t she demanding he let go of her arm? She darted a glance around the coffee shop. Most of the customers’ attention was on their morning papers.

“I don’t need a date. I need a pretend one.”

Interview with Ainslie Paton, Author of Getting Real

Please give a warm welcome to Ainslie Paton, who is visiting the virtual offices to chat about her rock n’ roll romance, Getting Real.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Ainslie Paton] Oh Mom, do I have to? Okay. I like to watch. That’s it, that’s the key plot point. That tells you both too little and too much. And has the side benefit of making me sound way more interesting than I actually am.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Getting Real?

[Ainslie Paton] This is not your classic rock star romance.

In the classic rock star romance the hero is the musician and the leading lady is in some ways subservient or dependent on him as either a groupie, a fan, a journalist or an ex-girlfriend from his pre-fame days. Oh sure, the heroine eventually puts the dude on his knees, but I wondered what would happen when it was the other way around.

I wanted my heroine on top and in control. I wanted her powerful and independent. And then I wanted to screw with her and put all the things she’d rejected in her life in a different perspective, particularly men.

Getting Real is a story about how tragedy shapes people and how forgiveness is the only way forward. It’s also about fear, both rational and irrational, change and learning to be true.

It’s the story of a badass rock chick and a boy next door roadie and what happens when they challenge each other.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Ainslie Paton] You do not want to be in my dreams. I had a waking vision where I saw a singer suspended above her raging, screaming audience. She was performing her heart out, fearless and fabulous. But with her was a man who was terrified – meltdown point terrified. He was holding on to her as if she was the only thing that would keep him from falling.

Of course I had to find a story to go with that.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Rielle?

[Ainslie Paton] Hard shell, soft interior, brave. Have I mentioned I do words not numbers?

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Jake had a theme song, what would it be?

[Ainslie Paton] Old AC/DC. “It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock n roll.”

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Rielle is never without.

[Ainslie Paton] Her tough girl rock chick disguise.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Jake’s bedroom?

[Ainslie Paton] Primarily Jake! As a professional touring roadie he’s rarely at home. Also clean sheets and stray women. He’s a nice boy!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Rielle’s greatest regret?

[Ainslie Paton] Ah – now that would be a huge spoiler. HUGE. I reserve the right to totally fudge this question. It’s not the tattoos, or the scar.

But ok if you read the free prequel you’ll get the picture:

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Ainslie Paton] Okay, you’re going to think I’m a lunatic and oh, oh so, so boring. There are two key ones: Butt in seat—meaning I have to sweat it and sleep—meaning stuff comes to me in dreams and waking moments. And then there’s brilliant TV, other clever writers and what happens inside my brain at the gym when I’m on the deadly boring elliptical and simply trying to breath. Oh and sometimes migraine medication is a blast! But maybe don’t tell anyone that.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Ainslie Paton] I can write in my head and frequently do. But I do need to scratch it down eventually. So keyboard and screen, pen and pad, pencil and scrap paper, finger and steamed up mirror. They all work. But they work way better with coffee!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Ainslie Paton] Gone Girl. I squealed! And I’m not a squealer. I like to watch remember. Squealing would just give me away! If you’re a watcher you have to be quiet.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Ainslie Paton] Not a book, a person. My grandfather. He used to tell stories. They always had chocolate cake and fire engines in them. A storybook was the next best thing to a grandfather story.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Ainslie Paton] Oh gawd I’m so boring. Read!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Ainslie Paton] They can read my blog – although I wouldn’t read my blog. It’s random! I have a facebook page I occasionally remember to feed and I twitter when I should be doing something more valuable.

Here’s the dets:

@Ainslie Paton

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!
