Interview with Abby Niles, Author of Extreme Love

Please welcome Abby Niles to the virtual offices today!  Abby is here to chat about her new release Extreme Love.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Abby Niles] A bull-headed pain in the butt who’ll bend over backwards for those she loves.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Extreme Love?

[Abby Niles] Extreme Love centers on Caitlyn and Dante.

Dante is a popular and undefeated MMA fighter and is used to women falling all over him. When he meets the beautiful Caitlyn, and she does the exact opposite, he loves the challenge she represents and makes it his mission to get past her defenses. Dante is also training for his title shot against the also undefeated, Richard Sentori, who is notorious for using any means necessary to get under his opponent’s skin in the hopes he’ll enter the cage fighting with emotion and not with his head. Dante, however, is always focused, but when Sentori discovers Dante’s one weakness, that focus is put to the test.

Caitlyn has recently lost 80 pounds and is struggling to banish the last of her life-long insecurities. When Dante storms into her life, and is more man than she’s used to dealing with, she feels greener than ever and tries to push him away. She also doesn’t want to encourage the attention of a cage fighter, a sport she finds appalling. But Dante’s not the sort of man you just push away, and as her need for him grows, so does her need to accept herself and his career. Can she come to terms with the violence he willingly embraces every time he steps into the cage or will watching Dante eat a fist be too much for her to handle?

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Abby Niles] Back in 2008, I was in a really bad place in my life. I’d lost a ton of weight after being overweight since childhood. I’d gone from weighing 245 pounds to 167 pounds, from wearing a size 22/24 to wearing a 12, and yet, I still couldn’t stop scowling at myself in the mirror. I’d naively believed that losing the weight would fix all the image issues I had with myself. Maybe for some, losing weight does that, but it didn’t for me. My dark, chewy chunks were embedded deep and refused to let go and it was stopping me from accepting the body I’d busted butt for. I knew who I was when I was overweight. I’d spent 28 years as that Abby. This new Abby was overwhelming and I clung to the old me because I was terrified of the new me. I knew I couldn’t continue like this and I needed to find a way to let go. The idea of Extreme Love came to me one day. Caitlyn became my catalyst. As she started her journey to accepting her new body and new life, I did also. I cried so much while I wrote this book. But it was cleansing. As Caitlyn grew as a character, I grew as a person. I’m forever grateful to her.

As for the MMA portion of the story. I’m such a HUGE fan of the UFC, and Caitlyn needed someone who would bring her far outside her comfort zone and refuse to back down. Who better than an undefeated cage fighter who isn’t used to losing?

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Caitlyn?

[Abby Niles] Flustered, aroused, fighting

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Dante had a theme song, what would it be?

[Abby Niles] I always thought of the UFC’s The Ultimate Fighter theme song when writing this book.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Caitlyn is never without.

[Abby Niles] Can’t say never, but she carries her gym bag in the trunk of the car at all times since she never knows when she’ll get the urge to use the steam room, which is her sanctuary.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Dante’s bedroom?

[Abby Niles] Man, you’re really making me think right now, lol. Let’s see…a mess, potpourri, a chick movie.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Caitlyn’s greatest regret?

[Abby Niles] Not losing the weight before she had.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Abby Niles] Really my influences come from everywhere. Movies, songs, other books, something I see or overhear, my own personal life, fears etc. There really is no rhyme or reason to it.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Abby Niles] Silence, coffee and coffee

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Abby Niles] I’m totally a Jennifer Amentrout fan-girl now. I devoured the Lux Series, and I’m impatiently waiting for the next book.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Abby Niles] I have a series that turned me on to reading in 6th grade. The Sweet Valley High books. Anyone remember those?

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Abby Niles] Sleep. Yeah, I know not very exciting, but between being a single mom, having a day job and writing, a good night’s sleep is rare.

About the book:

New body. New clothes. New men.

Used to the average Joe, Caitlyn Moore is overwhelmed when the supremely masculine Dante Jones walks into her life and expresses an interest in her. At first she pushes him away, refusing to encourage the attention of a cage fighter. Then she learns Dante has a love ‘em and leave ‘em reputation. What better way to fine-tune her non-existent flirting skills than with a male who won’t stick around? But Dante has no intention of being a practice dummy; he’s out for all or nothing. Now Caitlyn must accept Dante—violent career and all—or let him go.

Dante “Inferno” Jones has one goal: win the Welterweight Championship. At a time when focus is crucial, the last thing he needs is a distraction. Yet Caitlyn Moore becomes a challenge he can’t resist. When the light-hearted pursuit shifts to a battle to win her heart, his focus is shot. Faced with losing the biggest match of his career, Dante must decide if his extreme life also has room for Extreme Love.

Gina  Maxwell is the author of Seducing Cinderella, a red-hot romance from Entangled Publisher’s new Brazen imprint.  Gina stopped by the virtual offices for a chat, and she brought along a digital copy of her book for one of you to win!

[Manga Maniac Café] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Gina L Maxwell] Wife & mother. Addicted to romance books, Keurig coffee, dark chocolate, & writing about sexy alpha heroes & Super Power is Sonic Perkiness!

[Manga Maniac Café] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Gina L Maxwell] I always start my stories with my characters, more specifically my hero. Once I have him figured out, I try to think of the kind of heroine he needs and who will bring him to his knees when he’s not looking. THEN I try to figure out the basic gist of the story. I don’t put too much of it together because I’m a pantser and like finding out the story’s details as I write.

With Seducing Cinderella, I found a picture of male model Parker Hurley that totally captivated me. He’s staring at the camera all intense with nothing on but a pair of shorts and black wraps on his hands. I’m also a huge UFC (Ultimate Fighting Challenge) and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fan, so the fighter theme jumped out at me immediately. It was then I knew I wanted to write a story about a UFC fighter and his struggle to overcome an injury and reclaim his title, among other things. So I gave him Lucie, a physical therapist who needed some help of her own that he’d be able to give her. Then I sat back and let them do their thing.

[Manga Maniac Café] What three words best describe Reid?

[Gina L Maxwell] Charming, sexy, protective

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are three things Lucie would never have in her bedroom?

[Gina L Maxwell] An exercise machine (she has a dedicated room/office for that), uncluttered surfaces (why would her personal space be any different than her work space?), or designer anything (she prefers things simple and practical).

[Manga Maniac Café] If Lucie had a theme song, what would it be?

[Gina L Maxwell] Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars. At least, that’s what I think Reid would pick for her.

[Manga Maniac Café] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Gina L Maxwell] Amber Lin’s Giving It Up. Her writing was spectacular and the story so incredibly compelling. I can honestly say it’s not anything that I would normally read, but I’m so glad I did! The book totally blew me away! Everyone should check it out, regardless if it’s their normal reading fare or not.

[Manga Maniac Café] How can readers connect with you?

[Gina L Maxwell] Readers can join my one-of-a-kind romance mafia, called the Maxwell Mob, on my website at By signing up for that, they’ll receive special announcements, exclusive excerpts, and Maxwell Mob swag.

I’m also on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, & Pinterest, and I love to hear from readers, so don’t be shy!

Author Information

Growing up in small town Fort Atkinson, WI, Gina L. Maxwell, formerly Bisbee, could often be found onstage in the latest theatrical production, performing with her high school show choir, or holding office in her local FFA chapter. She dreamed of following in her father’s footsteps in the entertainment business, of enabling her audience to forget about life for a few hours as they enjoyed the stories she told through her love of singing, dancing, and acting. It wasn’t until her sophomore year in college when she realized she had no acting talent to speak of and her dream needed some adjusting. Another ten years would pass before she discovered a different means to accomplishing the same dream.

Within those ten years Gina married her high school sweetheart, had two beautiful children, and moved more times than she cared to count. In 2009 she started writing as a hobby while her kids were in school, and it quickly became an obsession she couldn’t stop, and then a dream to publish stories of love and passion for romance addicts just like her.

Three years later, her dream came true when she signed with Entangled Publishing for a total of seven books in two of their imprints.

Her Fighting for Love series with MMA heroes debuted July 20th, 2012 for the digital Brazen imprint with the first book, Seducing Cinderella, and reached #9 on Barnes & Noble’s best seller list in just seven days.

The first book in her paranormal romance trilogy, Desires of the Soul, is set to release both digitally and in mass trade paperback in Summer 2013 for the Entangled Select imprint.

When she’s not writing or wrangling plot bunnies, Gina keeps busy with her wonderful family and their ever-growing extra-curricular schedules. Thanks to their immense patience and support, she’s able to do The Thing She Was Meant To Do and live her dream of bringing a little romantic fantasy to the world, even if only in the pages of a good book.
