Review and Giveaway–Can’t Stop Lovin’ You by Lynnette Austin

May Contain Spoilers

I couldn’t resist the combination of a small town and a veterinarian hero.  Plus, Can’t Stop Lovin’ You features a second chance at love trope, and you all know how much I love those!  I enjoyed this book, though I thought there were a few pacing issues near the middle that kept it from getting a higher grade.  I really liked Brawley, the contrite hero, but I wondered if he would be able to convince Maggie that he deserved a second chance.

Review: The Lost by Caridad Pineiro

Title:  The Lost

Author:  Caridad Pineiro

Publisher:  Forever

ISBN: 978-0446584616

May Contain Spoilers

From Amazon:

Adam Bruno is no ordinary millionaire. The heir to an ancient race possessing a dark, powerful magic, he can shapeshift and create energy. His gifts make him a living weapon and have forced him to live in seclusion. But now an inhuman force hunts down Adam-just when he finds someone who makes him feel more human than he ever imagined possible . . .
Home from combat in Iraq, Bobbie Carerra wants only peace, yet soon joins Adam in a terrifying battle against paranormal enemies who hide in plain sight. She’s drawn to his strength of mind and body; he’s attracted to her courage and intoxicating energy. Their scorching passion can either transport them to the heights of ecstasy or-if Adam’s powers rage out of control-destroy them. But when an invisible brotherhood tightens its nets and someone Adam trusts betrays him, only a heartrending decision can save them.

Now that I am reading paranormal romances, I jumped at the chance to take The Lost by Caridad Pineiro for a spin.  While the book isn’t perfect, it did keep me entertained for the duration, with only two lags of my attention.  The first was at the beginning, as the characters are introduced in rapid succession, and it wasn’t until Bobbie makes her initial appearance that I was totally engaged in the book.  The only other time my attention wandered was near the end, when the star of the chapter was a character that I did not like.  I’m sorry, Salvatore, but your constant meddling and manipulations to further your own ends did not endear you to me.   What I really wanted was for someone to haul off and slug you, because that is what you deserved!

Adam Bruno has been raised by Salvatore, and he is unique, to say the least.  Fascinated with alternative sources of energy, he is actually like a big rechargeable battery himself.  Isolated from his own kind, he wonders if there are any other people like him, or if he is a complete freak of nature.  What he doesn’t know is that he is the son of powerful Light Hunters, and they have been tirelessly searching for him for the last 20 years.  The Light Hunters need Adam’s incredible powers to save their tribe from extinction, but they aren’t the only ones looking for him.  The Shadow Hunters, enemies of the Light Hunters, want his powers too, and they won’t rest until they have him under their control.

With everyone after poor Adam, and his own father scheming against him, you can expect lots of action.  After Adam and Bobbie meet during a kidnapping attempt, they discover that they have an unshakable bond between them.  Bobbie is an interesting character, and she was my favorite of all of the cast members.  She barely survived a bomb blast in Iraq, and she is still haunted by the deaths of her men.  She is suffering from guilt and PTSD, and she keeps wondering why she is still alive.  She was responsible for her platoon, and she failed them in the most fundamental way possible.  Like Adam, she had lost her sense of self, and it was nice to see her begin to mend emotionally with Adam’s help.

Which brings me to some nit-picks about Adam, and caused me to not like him quite so much.  After Salvatore butts into his business again, and casts doubts on Bobbie’s true intentions, Adam buys into everything his adoptive father tells him.  Even though he knows that Salvatore is keeping secrets from him, and even though he knows that Salvatore isn’t being totally upfront with him either.  I didn’t enjoy this particular plot point.  Adam has been isolated for his entire life because of his unpredictable powers,  and Bobbie was the first person to see him and to accept him for who he was.  It just frustrated me that Salvatore could so easily derail their relationship.

The Lost is an exciting read, with a sexy hero and a brave, likeable heroine.  It’s also a fast read, so if you have a couple of hours to kill and you enjoy paranormal romances, you might want to get this a test drive yourself.
