[Manga Maniac Cafe] Good morning, Barbara! Thank you for dropping by the virtual offices to talk about your latest release, Rancher at Risk.
[Barbara White Daille] Thanks a bunch to Julie for the invitation to chat with you today!
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.
[Barbara White Daille] Exercise and housework fanatic—NOT. 😉 But gets ’em done. Loves husband, books, chocolate, & reading and/or writing the perfect happy ending for hero & heroine.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Rancher at Risk?
[Barbara White Daille] Thanks, I’d love to.
My hero, Ryan Malloy, lost his family in an accident and is now on the verge of losing everything else in his life—his job, his reputation, even his own self-respect. His boss reassigns him in order to give him one last chance to redeem himself. But the minute Ryan arrives in Flagman’s Folly to start the new job, he gets into trouble…with a woman he soon finds out he’s going to be supervising.
Lianne Ward has just left a verbally abusive relationship with a man who believes her deafness will keep her from succeeding in the hearing world. She’s determined to prove herself in her new job but hasn’t counted on the new boss who comes with it.
When Ryan and Lianne find they’re working together and sharing a house, things heat up—especially once they discover an unwanted mutual attraction.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?
[Barbara White Daille] Lianne plays a minor role in a couple of the previous Flagman’s Folly books. (Note: the books all stand alone, with the hero and heroine of each reaching their happy ending. Lianne’s sister is the heroine of A Rancher’s Pride.)
I always knew I wanted to tell Lianne’s story, but I needed to wait for the right book to come along. Or maybe the right hero! 😉
Ryan…oh, Ryan. He came to me in a flash, the way some characters do. As usual, though, I didn’t know everything about him. What I did know: he was traumatized by the loss of his family and angry that he couldn’t get answers about the accident. As a result, he was a man just a step away from disaster.
His situation hasn’t improved. As a result, he has developed a strong need to control everything around him. And the one thing Lianne doesn’t want is to be controlled. I knew the minute these two got together there would be sparks—both the angry and the sensual kind.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Lianne?
[Barbara White Daille] Proud. Independent. Tenacious.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Ryan had a theme song, what would it be?
[Barbara White Daille] The way he’s feeling right now, any country song about heartbreak, loss, or despair would do.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Lianne is never without.
[Barbara White Daille] Her cell phone. It’s her favorite communication link to the world, and for that very reason, she calls it her lifeline.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Ryan’s bathroom?
[Barbara White Daille] Hmm…this is a tough one…
A scale. A bottle of scented shampoo. A bathrobe.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?
[Barbara White Daille] A computer. Or a notebook and pen. And time.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name three things on your desk right now.
[Barbara White Daille] My laptop. A calendar. A tiny silver frame with the cover of my first book inside. I was so, so lucky! The cover shows an absolutely ADORABLE picture of the heroine’s son.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?
[Barbara White Daille] Spend time with my husband, mostly. A few other things from my favorites list: Read. Eat. Inhale chocolate. Read cookbooks. (Notice, I don’t say cook. LOL) Do crosswords, Sudoku, and any other kind of puzzle. Mess up cross-stitch samplers and tear them apart again. Chat with Facebook friends and tweeps and do face-to-face lunches with friends.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?
[Barbara White Daille] They can always reach me through my website, where there’s a Contact page to get in touch with me. To keep up with the latest news, there are also forms at the website, where they can sign up for my e-mailed newsletter and the updates/posts I add to my blog page, “The Daille-y News.” The website is: www.barbarawhitedaille.com
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!
About Rancher at Risk:
After the loss of his family in a tragic accident, Ryan Malloy has been given one last chance to change his life. Deaf since birth, Lianne has never let her disability define who she is. But, she’s yet to meet a man who treats her as an equal. Ryan seems different…that is, when they’re not butting heads over the ranch’s new school for disadvantaged boys
Forced to work together, Lianne and Ryan discover an unexpected attraction beneath their quarreling. But will Ryan’s painful past drive them apart…permanently?
