Interview with Scarlet Wilson, Author of English Girl in New York

Please welcome Scarlet Wilson to the virtual offices this morning.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Scarlet Wilson] Mad Scotswoman. Mum. Writer. Nurse. Love holidays. Tidiness is an optional extra.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about English Girl in New York?

[Scarlet Wilson] English Girl in New York is about Carrie McKenzie coming to New York for business to get away from her past.  She hears a strange noise one night and finds an abandoned baby on the doorstep of where she is staying.  New York is in the middle of a freak snowstorm and has come to a standstill.  Carrie has lots of good reasons to not cope well with this, thankfully handsome New York Cop Daniel Cooper to come to her rescue–even if he does have his arm in a plastercast!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What did you enjoy most about working on this book?

[Scarlet Wilson] Probably the setting.  I’d just visited New York for my birthday with my husband and kids and we loved every second.  I tried to capture some of the atmosphere of New York in my book.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Carrie?

[Scarlet Wilson] Loving, quiet, bereaved.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Dan had a theme song, what would it be?

[Scarlet Wilson] It isn’t something dark and brooding.  It’s going to be upbeat

Tell Her About It by Billy Joel

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Carrie is never without.

[Scarlet Wilson] Her silver box that she keeps under her bed

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is something you will never find in Dan’s bedroom?

[Scarlet Wilson] Grandad pyjamas!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Carrie’s greatest regret?

[Scarlet Wilson] She doesn’t really have regrets, but is certainly sad by the cards she’s been dealt

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Scarlet Wilson] Truth is, I can write anywhere, at anytime.  I’ve had to learn to do that because I work fulltime and have two young kids who have activities every night of the week and every weekend.

My perfect idea of writing is peace and quiet, my laptop and a Costa skinny latte with sugar free caramel!

Oh yeah, and a banana and pecan loaf!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Scarlet Wilson] The Returned by Jason Mott – just outstanding.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Scarlet Wilson] The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton, I loved her stories when I was a kid

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Scarlet Wilson] Read, read and more reading.  I’m a scary reader.  I can read superfast, the average book takes me around an hour and then I have spreadsheet giving books mark out of 10.  Yip, definitely scary!

I’m also partial to Christmas movies…

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Scarlet Wilson] I have a website

A twitter account   @scarlet_wilson

and a facebook Scarlet Wilson Author Page

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!

About the book:

Rescued on her doorstep

After an annus horribilis, the glittering lights of Manhattan are irresistible to English girl Carrie McKenzie. She’s climbed the Empire State Building, but can’t get a smile from her gorgeous neighbor! Until a tiny abandoned baby on her doorstep brings her to his door….

Cop Dan Cooper has an obligation to protect, and with Carrie out of her depth, he must come to her rescue. Surely two pairs of hands are better than one? Until she becomes a distraction, not just because of her tempting curves, but because of the pain in her eyes when she looks at the precious bundle in their charge….
