Interview with Natalie Damschroder, Author of Sunroper and Giveaway!

[Manga Maniac Cafe]  Good morning, Natalie!  Can you describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Natalie Damschroder] Driven, knowledgeable (aka know-it-all), passionate reader, writer, fan of the New England Patriots, and married mother of two awesome teens

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Sunroper?

[Natalie Damschroder] Sunroper is the third book in the Goddesses Rising trilogy and features Marley Canton, a goddess who had lost her powers and with them, her strength. After the events of Under the Moon and Heavy Metal, she’s determined to stop being a victim and do something worthy with the rest of her life. But she doesn’t *feel* worthy, and her losses came from trusting the wrong man, and that makes it very difficult for her to allow involvement with Gage Samargo. Her wariness isn’t entirely misplaced, since Gage has his own secrets and agenda that might keep him from putting the goddesses—and Marley—first.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Natalie Damschroder] Most of it developed out of the first two books. In Under the Moon, we had a big enemy to goddesses, a leech who was draining their powers. In Heavy Metal, we learned that he wasn’t working alone, and the extinction of the line descended from gods was a big myth. This threw the carefully ordered world of the goddesses into disarray. Now, in Sunroper, they are struggling to maintain that shaky foundation and protect themselves, when a new threat has emerged that can take down *everyone*. And it comes, in a way, from within.

I actually came up with the title first. I’m not sure where the word came from, but it followed the first two so nicely. But Marley already existed, and her power source wasn’t the sun, which meant the threat to her and everyone else had to be connected to the sun in another way.

Gage represents the other side in the goddess conflict, but they have a common enemy. He kind of grabbed hold of my…uh, heart as soon as he walked onto the page in his fancy, expensive-yet-scuffed boots. :)

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had a theme song, what would it be?

[Natalie Damschroder] Ricky Martin’s The Cup of Life. "Nothing can hold you back if you really want it!" :)

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing  you won’t leave home without.

[Natalie Damschroder] My Kindle! Or at the very least my iPod, which has a Kindle app. I *never* want to be stuck somewhere bored with nothing to read. The iPod also provides podcasts to listen to when I can’t read (like when I’m driving or grocery shopping).

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Natalie Damschroder] 1. A keyboard

2. An idea
3. A cup of tea

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Natalie Damschroder] Spirit and Dust by Rosemary Clement-Moore. I’d read all her other books and kind of let this one linger until I had to read something I knew I’d really like. And her talent still hit me harder than I expected, making me lament I don’t have anything new from her to read right away.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Natalie Damschroder] The best thing to do is go to the contact page on my website and pick your poison. There’s a web form for private contact as well as links to my Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads, Google+, BookLikes, and blog. http://nataliedamschroder.com/contact-natalie/

Thanks so much for having me today!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!

Book Description:

Marley Canton is done being a victim. A year and a half has passed since she discovered her ability to nullify power in those who aren’t supposed to have it. She’s now on a quest not only to stop the brats who’ve become addicted to goddess power, but also to find the source of their addiction.

Like Marley, Gage Samargo is tracking down the goddess who went rogue decades ago. Insane with too much power from the sun, she’s selling that energy to Gage’s younger brother and his friends, who are no longer content to come into power naturally. While they work to find a way to neutralize the goddess, Marley discovers that every time she nullifies someone, she takes on some of the goddess’s insanity.

Gage falls for Marley’s sharp wit and intense desire to right wrongs. But once he discovers she’s turning into her enemy, is it too late to back away?

Excerpt:

She wrapped both hands around the mug to absorb the heat. There was only one way to answer that question. “I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not.”

He said it with such compassion and lack of judgment that she blinked back tears, tilting her head to stare at the shadowed ceiling as if it had the power to keep the emotion at bay.

“It’s okay to be sorry he’s gone.”

It was the perfect summation of everything she’d been analyzing a few minutes ago, and it broke her. She leaned to set the almost-empty mug on the nightstand and covered her face with her hands, suppressed sobs racking her body.

Gage’s fingers wrapped around her upper arms. He pulled her into his lap, settling her effortlessly and cradling her against his chest. He even rocked her. Marley’s sob turned into a giggle, a sound she hadn’t made in years.

“What’s so funny?”

“I might have broken down, but I’m still not a cradling kind of woman.” But she used to be.

Maybe it was okay to allow some of that back in. Her head fit just right in the curve of his shoulder, and his scent was as warm, spicy, and enticing as the cocoa had been. The shirt was soft, his thighs hard, and his arms encircled her protectively.

“My mistake. I thought you needed comforting.” He bent his head to nuzzle her, sending a cascade of tingles over her skin.

She drew a sharp breath at the desire that followed it, the need to touch and be touched overwhelming everything else. “No, comfort’s not really what I need,” she half whispered. She slowly tilted her head up until her mouth brushed over his.

His tongue flicked out for a half-second taste. Marley shuddered and twisted her hand into his shirt.

“You said this was bad,” Gage reminded her, but he’d shifted one hand to her rib cage, spreading his fingers to tease the side of her breast.

“It is. It’s the worst idea I’ve had in five years.”
