Please give a warm welcome to Barbara DeLeo this morning!
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in five words or less.
Barbara DeLeo] Short, blonde, Scorpio, wine drinker
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about last Chance Proposal?
[Barbara DeLeo] Last Chance Proposal is about the incredible hold a first love can have over you. Ellie and Cy were best friends and then lovers until a tragic accident, and the resulting secrets around it, tore them apart. Their worlds have become dramatically different, but when Cy needs a stand-in mother for his damaged son, Ellie’s the only person he can turn to for help.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?
[Barbara DeLeo] Each year my husband, four kids and Cosmo the mini schnauzer, stay at a remote beach in New Zealand over summer. It’s a place where most of the tiny wooden houses have been holiday homes for generations of families. Of course our summer is at Christmas time so there are lots of celebrations and people coming from far and wide.
One year I imagined what would happen if two people who’d been first loves in a place like this returned after being estranged for eight years. What would they find? How would they react to each other? And what if one had to ask the other an unthinkable favor?
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What did you enjoy most about working on this book?
[Barbara DeLeo] That the places and people were so vivid to me. In the book, Jonty, Cy’s son finds an injured swamp hen chick, just like my kids did one year, and Ellie’s house, Starfish Cottage is modeled on the house we stay in.
By the end of writing the book I didn’t want to leave the town and characters that I’d grown to love
[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had a theme song, what would it be?
[Barbara DeLeo] When I’m trying to wrangle my two sets of twins it’d be….Roar.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing you won’t leave home without.
[Barbara DeLeo] My iPhone. Sadly, I’m a technophile and get all antsy if I haven’t got my address book and Google and my kindle library with me at all times.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us three things on your desk right now.
[Barbara DeLeo] The dog’s leash – she brought it over and thinks I should be able to take a hint…. A pile of mail that I should have filed last week. A bright red love heart paper weight.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you share some books that you enjoyed recently?
[Barbara DeLeo] I pretty much only read romance and have read some stunning books lately. I’ve recently read “Winning the Boss’s Heart” by Hayson Manning and absolutely loved it and I’ve just finished “Her Best Worst Mistake” by Sarah Mayberry.

About the author
Barbara DeLeo’s first book, co-written with her best friend, was a story about beauty queens in space. She was eleven, and the sole, handwritten copy was lost years ago, much to everyone’s relief. It’s some small miracle that she kept the faith and is now living her dream of writing sparkling contemporary romance with unforgettable characters.
After completing degrees in Psychology and English then travelling the world, Barbara married her winemaker hero and had two sets of twins.
She still loves telling stories about finding love in all the wrong places, with not a beauty queen or spaceship in sight.
