[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.
[Kelley York] Capable of wanting to read/write rainbows and unicorns one second, and death and destruction in the next. I like books to make me cry.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Hushed?
[Kelley York] Hushed was the second book I ever completed, and the first one published. It’s a dark thriller revolving around the main protagonist (antagonist?) Archer, the girl he’s always been in love with, and the boy who is going to change everything.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?
[Kelley York] All my books begin with a character. Vince for Suicide Watch, Chance for Made of Stars, and…of course…Archer for Hushed. I take a character concept or idea and build around it. With Archer, it began with:
Who is my main character: Archer Pond. College student. Kills people.
Why does he kill people?: To protect a girl he loves.
How does she react to this? Does he feel remorse for what he does? What proves to be the turning point that makes him want to quit?
Basically, I start asking myself all these questions and build myself a web, of sorts, until I have enough info to start writing.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Archer?
[Kelley York] Paranoid, anxious, loyal.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Vivian had a theme song, what would it be?
[Kelley York] This one is easy. Hello by Burning Tree Project. It’s Archer’s song to Vivian, so I’m not sure if it’s entirely a Vivian song, but…
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Evan is never without.
[Kelley York] Evan would say "My legs! Never go anywhere without them." A more appropriate answer might be a watch his dad gave him that he wears almost all the time, unless he’s in the water.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Archer’s bedroom?
[Kelley York] (1) Cologne or any type of body spray. They give him headaches. (2) People that aren’t Evan. Honestly, sometimes he doesn’t even want Evan there. He likes things all in very neat order, and Evan…is not neat. Archer doesn’t like visitors in his home period. (3) Trash/clutter. In the event he and Evan are sharing a room, Archer will clean constantly to ensure tidiness.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Archer’s greatest regret?
[Kelley York] Oh, Archer is a well of regrets. He regrets killing, he regrets Vivian, he regrets dragging Evan into his mess, and he regrets not trying harder with his mother.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?
[Kelley York] I’m never sure how to answer this kind of question. Music influences me the most. I got the idea for Archer while listening to The Outsider by A Perfect Circle, for instance. Even if the lyrics don’t always fit, sometimes the tune or mood of a song can be incredibly inspiring.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?
[Kelley York] Quiet! I don’t mind music or white noise in the background, but people are very distracting for me. Getting interrupted while I’m in the groove results in me getting cranky and frustrated because I lost my train of thought.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What was your biggest distraction while working on Hushed?
[Kelley York] Being scared that it was too dark. I kept thinking, "What the hell is this? This is too dark. No one is going to want it." I had to shove that thought aside early on in order to be able to finish.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?
[Kelley York] I’m a failure and haven’t finished anything recently. I did love Teeth by Hannah Moskowitz, and I LOOOOOOOVED the Newsflesh series by Mira Grant.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?
[Kelley York] Oh, man. I read a lot as a kid. The Last Unicorn, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, etc. If I look on my GoodReads account, the first book I marked on there as read was Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. Love that series. Maybe it got me back into reading since I stopped for a few years.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?
[Kelley York] I’m a nail artist and I work in a salon by day! (Come see me. ) I also like to create covers, and do so for my own self-pubbed works, anyone who hires me, and for Entangled Publishing. I did the covers for Olivia Twisted by Vivi Barnes, both of Sara Hantz’s covers, and the cover for this re-release of Hushed. I’ll sometimes write articles for various websites for extra money, but they’re nothing exciting. For fun, non-work related…I draw now and again, I watch TV, play on Tumblr, and play video games.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?
[Kelley York] If there’s a social media, I probably have it. Facebook | Tumblr | Twitter | E-mail | Website | Pinterest. I’m friendly, I promise! Anyone is free to contact me for any reason at all. I’ll always respond.
Hushed by Kelley York
He’s loved her. Killed for her. Yet he may not be able to save her.
Eighteen-year-old Archer couldn’t protect his best friend, Vivian, from what happened when they were kids. Since then, he’s never stopped trying to shelter her from everything else. It doesn’t matter that Vivian only uses him when skipping from one toxic relationship to another. Archer is always there, reeled in and tossed out, waiting to be noticed.
Then Evan Bishop breezes into town with a warm smile and calming touch, and Archer can’t deny his attraction to him. Evan is the only person who keeps him around without a single string attached. And the harder Archer falls for Evan, the more he sees Vivian for the manipulative hot-mess she really is.
But Viv has her hooks in deep, and once she finds out Archer’s dark secret, she threatens to expose the truth if she doesn’t get what she wants. And what she wants is for him to end his relationship with Evan…permanently.
Once upon a time, Kelley York was born in central California. And it’s there she she still resides with her lovely wife, step-daughter, and an abundance of cats, while fantasizing about moving to England or Ireland. She has a fascination with bells and animals, is a lover of video games, Doctor Who, manga and anime, and likes to pretend she’s a decent photographer. Her life goal is to find a real unicorn. Or at least write about them.
Kelley is a sucker for dark fiction. She loves writing twisted characters, tragic happenings, and bittersweet endings that leave you wondering and crying. Character development takes center stage in her books because the bounds of a person’s character and the workings of their mind are limitless.
Her first book, HUSHED, was released by Entangled Publishing in December 2011. Her second and third books, HOLLOWED and SUICIDE WATCH, were released in 2012, and her next Entangled book, MADE OF STARS, is slated for October 1st, 2013.
