Interview with Tim Lebbon, Author of the Toxic City Series and Giveaway!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Good morning, Tim!  Welcome to the Manga Maniac Café.  Can you please describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Tim Lebbon] Writer, father, husband, Ironman, usually all at the same time.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about your Toxic City series?

[Tim Lebbon] It’s set in a near-future world where London has been destroyed in a terrorist attack.  There are, so the authorities claim, no survivors, and the city is toxic.  But in truth, there are survivors.  And some of them are developing strange powers.  The military guards London … and they are also experimenting on those who have managed to survive.

The novels follow a group of teenagers who infiltrate London in an effort to find missing family members.  But they find a lot more besides.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the series?

[Tim Lebbon] It’s a sort of big-scale siege story, and I love siege stories.  I also like dystopian fiction — I must have wiped out the world many times over.  The idea of a group of teens banding together to search for missing parents and siblings I found quite moving, and as I started to write the first book the characters quickly came to life.  They started to steer events, so much so that my ideas for books 2 and 3 changed drastically during the writing process.  That’s always a good sign!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Lucy-Anne?

[Tim Lebbon] Feisty, strong, loyal.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Jack is never without.

[Tim Lebbon] His memories of his parents.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What has been the most challenging part of writing this series?

[Tim Lebbon] Strictly from a writing viewpoint it’s remember all the details from previous books.  It’s my first trilogy, and whilst writing the third book I had to constantly refer back to the previous two to make sure I got things right!  I guess that’s a challenge in itself.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Tim Lebbon] I guess if I had to name one writer it would be Stephen King.  His work was a huge presence in my teens and still is now.  He’s the boss.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Tim Lebbon] My laptop, coffee, and the thought of a nice run or bike ride in the countryside later on.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Tim Lebbon] A Cold Season by Alison Littlewood.  Very spooky and disturbing, and I found the theme of a child being pulled from its parents terrifying.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Tim Lebbon] I enjoy reading, watching movies, and I’m heavily into triathlon (swimming, biking, running).  I’ve just finished my first Ironman.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Tim Lebbon] My website is, and I’m also on Facebook.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!

About Contagion:

Jack and his friends are in a race against time to save the remaining inhabitants of a postapocalyptic London from a nuclear bomb. Two years after London is struck by a devastating terrorist attack, it is cut off from the rest of the world, protected by a large force of soldiers (known as Choppers) while the rest of Britain believe that their ex-capital is a toxic, uninhabited wasteland. But that’s not true. Jack and his friends know that the truth is very different–and incredible: the few remaining survivors in London are changing; developing strange, fantastic powers; evolving. And the Chopper force guarding London is treating the ruined city as its own experimental ground. Now, Jack’s powers are growing. His friend Lucy-Anne’s powers are developing too, and Nomad–that mysterious woman who started it all–is close by. But the Choppers have initiated their final safeguard–a huge nuclear bomb that will wipe out London, and everyone still within its boundaries. Jack and his friends must spread the news of the bomb and save everyone they can. Before that can happen, Jack must face his father, the deadly Reaper, in their final showdown.

I’ve recently started reading Dystopian books and have been really enjoying them. It’s fun to read about our world so drastically changed and how people would survive. It sounds like a great story.

I’ve always been fascinated with stories about the end of the world as we know it, and the different ways authors come up with to bring about that end, as well as what happens to society afterwards. This series sounds like a wonderful example of that kind of story, one that I’m very excited to read.
