Interview with Cassie Mae, Author of How to Date a Nerd

Please welcome Cassie Mae to the virtual offices this morning! She’s here to tell us about How to Date a Nerd.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Cassie Mae] Big, brunette, and beautiful ;) And nerd through and through.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about How to Date a Nerd?

[Cassie Mae] It’s the first book in a series of “How to” novels, and I’m supah excited about it! It’s about a closet nerd who struggles to be herself and stay on the popular social ladder.

Nerd is my baby…first contemporary romance I wrote and it’s the one that started it all. So even though it’s my third release, it’s number one right in my nerdy heart.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Cassie Mae] I was bored to death one night and my eye caught my Harry Potter Scene It game. I decided I was going to play it till I got an answer wrong…and four hours later, hubby came home and asked what I was doing. When I told him, he said Star Wars trivia was next, and I thought, I’m writing a story about two nerds in love.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Zoe?

[Cassie Mae] Scared, confused, and a hot mess. (I know, that’s technically more than three, but oh well, lol)

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Zak had a theme song, what would it be?

[Cassie Mae] This. Completely this. http://cheezburger.com/38427905

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Zoe is never without.

[Cassie Mae] I know if she could, she’d carry her X-Men book everywhere she went.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Zak’s pocket?

[Cassie Mae] A ticket stub for a Kesha concert, a report card with an F on it, or a Team Kirk sticker (he’s a Picard fan ;))

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Zoe’s greatest regret?

[Cassie Mae]  Feeling like she had to hide who she is to be accepted.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Cassie Mae] My kids, my hubby, and my shower.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Cassie Mae] My computer, my brain, and my fingers… lol! Um, if we aren’t going literal though, I usually have something to drink, something to listen to, and a list of positive quotes and funny jokes to keep me in the lighthearted mood.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What was your biggest distraction while working on How to Date a Nerd?

[Cassie Mae]  My kids. But I’ve gotten used to that distraction ;)

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Cassie Mae] Catching Jordan. I love, love, love that book, and I want to marry Sam Henry.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Cassie Mae] HARRY POTTER! Of course! :)

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Cassie Mae] Sleep, watch TV, play video games. I’m that exciting, lol.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Cassie Mae] Follow my Facebook page! I love when people talk to me, so really, post stuff on there all the time and I’ll probably chat with you for as long as you’ll let me, lol.

About the book:

Zoe has a great pair of legs, perky boobs, and wears exactly what she needs to show it all off. She works hard for the easy sleazy ‘you only wish you were me’ reputation, burying who she really is—an all-out nerd.

The only time Zoe gets to be herself is when she hides under her comforter to read X-Men comics, sending jealousy stabs at everyone who attends Comic-Con. Keeping up her popular rep is too important, and she’s so damn insecure to care about the consequences. But when Zoe’s sister takes her car for a ‘crash and burn into a tree’ joyride, her parents get her a replacement. A manual. Something she doesn’t know how to operate, but her next door neighbor Zak sure as heck does.

Zak’s a geek to the core, shunned by everyone in school for playing Dungeons and Dragons at lunch and wearing “Use the Force” t-shirts. And Zoe’s got it bad for the boy. Only Zak doesn’t want Popular Zoe. He wants Geek Zoe.

She has to shove her insecurities and the fear of dropping a few rungs on the social ladder aside to prove to Zak who she really is and who she wants to be… if she can figure it out herself.
