Interview with Olivia Mayfield, Author of The Inheritance and Giveaway

Please give a warm welcome to Olivia Mayfield!  She’s visiting the virtual offices to chat about The Inheritance.

[Manga Maniac Café] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Olivia Mayfield] Caffeine lover, wine hoarder, book devourer, rabid fan of Jane Eyre, owns far too many scarves, destroys chocolate and ice cream for the good of mankind.

[Manga Maniac Café] Can you tell us a little about The Inheritance?

[Olivia Mayfield] Maggie’s forced to participate in an inheritance competition with her brother, ex-boyfriend and ex best friend when her grandfather dies—the first person to discover what happened to her sister who vanished 8 years ago will win the entirety of the estate. But someone is determined to keep those secrets buried…at all costs.

[Manga Maniac Café] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Olivia Mayfield] I decided I wanted to write about an inheritance competition—those fascinate me, when you make people work for it and compete against each other. But I wanted it to be a gritty mystery, too. About someone who simply vanished. What happened to the girl? How badly would it haunt you if your teen sister went to a party but never came back? From there, the characters and plot evolved.

[Manga Maniac Café] What three words best describe Maggie?

[Olivia Mayfield] Resourceful, haunted, determined.

[Manga Maniac Café]  If Bethany had a theme song, what would it be?

[Olivia Mayfield] Oh, you know it’s gonna be “Gold Digger” by Kanye. Haha. Or at least that’s what Maggie would say… ;-)

[Manga Maniac Café] Name one thing Andrew is never without.

[Olivia Mayfield] A condom? *snort* Okay, seriously. Probably his cell phone. He’s a lawyer—that thing is always glued on him.

[Manga Maniac Café] What three things will you never find in Maggie’s purse?

[Olivia Mayfield] This is a surprisingly hard question. I mean, the obvious answers are things like toasters, shoes, beer. I actually don’t know, lol. Maggie seems like she’d keep her purse pretty full with all her essentials…she likes to be prepared.

[Manga Maniac Café] What is Robert’s greatest regret?

[Olivia Mayfield]  Greatest regret? The same as Maggie’s—that he should have done more for his sister, should have somehow sensed what was to come. Then that terrible night might not have happened.

[Manga Maniac Café] Which scene from The Inheritance was your favorite to write?

[Olivia Mayfield]  Ohhhhh good question. Probably the pinnacle scene at the end of #5, when we find out the truth about what happened to Cassandra. The story has been building to that moment, and it was gut-wrenching to write it.

[Manga Maniac Café] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Olivia Mayfield] The art museum! Music! Life! There’s so much inspiration around me. The people I know influence me. The things I interact with. They all get stored in my head. Most won’t be used, but every once in a while you get a gem that goes perfectly in a book.

[Manga Maniac Café] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Olivia Mayfield] My computer, of course. My outline—I can’t write without plotting everything beforehand, so I know every day when I sit down what I’ll be accomplishing that day. And some form of caffeine is a must. :D

[Manga Maniac Café] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Olivia Mayfield]  Ohhhh! Probably Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. I’m late to read this classic, but it was super awesome. Drama, sex, intrigue, mystery…it has all the things I love in a book. I’m reading My Cousin Rachel by her right now, in fact.

[Manga Maniac Café] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Olivia Mayfield]  Oh geez. I’m not sure I could pick just one! Lol. I’ve been reading since I was really young (as I would venture most authors have). But probably Nancy Drew was my first deep love. I devoured those books.

[Manga Maniac Café] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Olivia Mayfield]  I like hanging with family and friends, camping, reading, shopping, watching movies, photography—oh, and I LOOOOVE karaoke! I’ll tear it up! ;-)

[Manga Maniac Café] How can readers connect with you?

[Olivia Mayfield] You can find all my contact info at my website: http://www.oliviamayfield.com — I hope to hear from you!! I’m also on twitter @OliviaMayfield, and my Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/AuthorOliviaMayfield.

[Manga Maniac Café] Thank you!

About the book:

Debut author Olivia Mayfield presents a thrilling and sexy new serial about seductive money, deadly secrets, and fatal attractions…

The Inheritance, Part I
The Will

Maggie Willings knew that returning home for her estranged grandfather’s funeral would not be easy, but she never expected the reading of his will to be the most difficult part. The four people named in the will—Maggie, her brother Robert, her ex-boyfriend Andrew, and her grandfather’s far-too-young girlfriend Bethany—are given a challenge: find out the truth about what happened to Maggie’s younger sister Cassandra, who vanished over eight years ago, and win the entirety of the estate.

Maggie is thrown by the strange request, reluctant to drag up painful memories of her sister’s disappearance, and bothered by her lingering attraction to Andrew, who wants to team up to solve the mystery. But there are ten million dollars on the line and Maggie has no idea where to start—or who she’ll be able to trust.
