Interview with Gail Ransom, Author of Sweet Treason and Giveaway

Please welcome special guest Gail Ranstrom to the virtual offices this morning!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Gail Ranstrom] Yikes! I’m awful at this stuff. Okay, try this…

Quirky, funny and friendly, Gail Ranstrom has written historical romantic suspense for Harlequin and Entangled Publishing.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Sweet Treason?

[Gail Ranstrom] Sweet Treason is a story about two people caught up in the extraordinary circumstances of war, intrigue and betrayal. Emily Nevins only wants to keep her family safe. Ryan Sutton is willing to die for justice, equality and security. When they discover their goals threaten the other’s goal, they must find a way to reconcile their differences before one of them has to pay the price for treason.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Gail Ranstrom] The concept grew out of a movie I was watching that made me ask myself if the American rebellion was any different than the lords who forced King John to sign the Magna Carta. Was it simply the span of an ocean that made it escalate from rebellion to revolution? Or was it more? In exploring that question, I found my characters, what they believed in, and how far they’d go to achieve it.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Emily?

[Gail Ranstrom] Determined, loyal, fierce.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Ryan had a theme song, what would it be?

[Gail Ranstrom] Some Nights by Fun – check it out: ( )

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Emily is never without.

[Gail Ranstrom] Her pride, her wits and her courage.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Ryan’s pocket?

[Gail Ranstrom] Snuff, secret messages, and anything lacy

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Emily’s greatest regret?

[Gail Ranstrom] That she took so long to realize what was really important to her.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Gail Ranstrom] Television and Movies always excite my imagination and make me ask questions. I’m always challenging my beliefs and looking for the boundaries. Apart from that, Books—all kinds. There are only so many themes, but every author adds her own particular twist to it and I’m always looking to see if there’s a button I can push or a boundary I can cross that hasn’t been done before.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Gail Ranstrom] Solitude, absence of exterior words (can’t even listen to music with lyrics if I’m going to hear those voices in my head), my laptop, and tea! Oops, that’s four… but I need them all.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What was your biggest distraction while working on Sweet Treason?

[Gail Ranstrom] I was traveling part of the time. It’s difficult to write on airplanes, in hotels, autos and someone else’s house. Especially since I am easily distracted.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Gail Ranstrom] Left me gasping, envious and wishing I’d written it? Hmm. There are a couple, but if I have to choose one right now, I’d go with Connie Brockway’s ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT. I was reading it on a train from LA to San Diego and my sister says I kept saying, ‘I can’t believe she did that!’ as I was reading. And I wasn’t talking about the heroine. I was talking about the author. She was really pushing the boundaries at the time. Might actually be tame by today’s standards. But I found myself wondering how many rules she could break in one book. And break them brilliantly! And make me want to break them, too.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Gail Ranstrom] I always liked to read just about anything—from Ian Fleming to Frank Yerby, Victoria Holt to Mary Stewart, but if I had to point to one book that sparked my passion and imagination, and made me want to write, it would be Shanna, by Kathleen Woodiwiss.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Gail Ranstrom] I like to antique, travel and make crystal bookmarks – even though ebooks are making them unnecessary. I use them as sun catchers, stylus charms, on key chains, and when I’m reading a print book.

I enjoyed the interview with Gail. I really like Kathleen Woodiwiss. She was one of the first authors I read years ago upon my intro into reading romance. Thanks for sharing 🙂
