Interview with Kris Fletcher, Author of Now You See Me and Giveaway!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Hi, Kris, and welcome to the Manga Maniac Café!  Can you please describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Kris Fletcher] I’m a doughnut-loving mother/wife/writer who likes to make up happily-ever-afters while bursting into song at random moments.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Now You See Me?

[Kris Fletcher] JT Delaney, the infamous bad boy of Comeback Cove, is back in town after 25 years away. He just wants to help his mother settle her affairs and move south with him. But Lydia Brewster looks beyond his reputation and sees the one person who can help her stave off the "heroic widow" label the town is determined to hang on her before she begins to believe it herself.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Kris Fletcher] In all honesty, I don’t remember! I wrote the first draft of this book a good 8 or 9 years ago, then put it away. I do know I wanted to find the most unbelievable match for a bad boy that I could think of. The next thing I knew, JT and Lyddie were parading through my head.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Lydia?

[Kris Fletcher] Determined. Dedicated. Hopeful.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If J T had a theme song, what would it be?

[Kris Fletcher] Nothing Wrong With You, by the Finn Brothers. I have a link to a Youtube video of them performing the song on my website ( Beautiful, haunting song that perfectly describes JT’s relationship with the town that was once his home.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Lydia is never without.

[Kris Fletcher] Her cell phone. She needs to be available to her kids anytime.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in J T’s bedroom?

[Kris Fletcher] Oh, that’s funny! Um …. a TV.  (He knows a bedroom is better for other activities.) A treadmill. (He gets his exercise by inline skating.) Anything that would remind him of Comeback Cove. (Even after 25 years away, he still misses it.)

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Lydia’s greatest regret?

[Kris Fletcher] Since her husband’s death, she’s been determined to live without regrets, which is how she pushes herself to proposition JT. She knows that giving up the chance to be with him would be the biggest regret of her life.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Kris Fletcher] Probably music. I think songwriters do an amazing job of conveying emotion with a very few precisely-chosen words, and I have often been inspired by a snippet of a lyric or the mood of a song. I also like to draw on my own experiences, or those of my kids, twisting them and milking them for the right effect. Nothing is safe. Mwahahahahaha 🙂

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Kris Fletcher] I have five kids so I’ve had to learn to write almost anywhere, at any time. There’s very little I actually need other than the tools I’m using at that moment to get the words on the page – alphasmart, laptop, pen & paper. But I definitely prefer writing in an empty house with instrumental music playing softly and an iced latte by my side. And a good night’s sleep always helps.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What was your biggest distraction while working on Now You See Me?

[Kris Fletcher] Probably the release of my first Superromance, A Better Father! It came out as I was revising Now You See Me. It was hard to buckle down to revisions when all I wanted to do was bask in the moment I’d waited for so long.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Kris Fletcher] The Haunting Of Maddy Clare, by Simone St. James. I usually go for light contemporaries, but after this won two RITA awards, I had to check it out. WOW! She sucked me into that world, surprised me, and scared the bejeebers out of me.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Kris Fletcher] It would be so far in my past that I can’t remember it. We were a family of readers – every Saturday afternoon when our chores were done, my mother would load us all into the car for a trip to the library. We came out with armloads of books and spent the rest of the day sprawled over the sofas, happily lost in our books. They’re such a part of me that I can’t remember ever not loving to read.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Kris Fletcher] What do I LIKE to do? Oh, the usual – spend the day lounging on a sofa, reading fabulous books while being serenaded by the Arrogant Worms and massaged by Indiana Jones. Which beats the heck out of what I really do when not writing – chauffeur kids, fight off dust bunnies, and become far too well known to the folks at the local grocery store.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Kris Fletcher] Many ways!

About the book:

Café owner Lydia Brewster wants to shake things up. And J.T. Delaney, infamous legend of Comeback Cove, just might be the man she needs. With his wild reputation, who better to help a girl shake off a "poor widow" image she’s too young to keep wearing?

Despite the rumors, J.T. doesn’t seem quite the troublemaker Lyddie’s heard about. He actually seems focused on business—the subject they don’t see eye to eye on. Really, all she wants is a fling. But after a few long, hot nights together, the most dangerous thing about J.T. is the unexpected way he makes her feel….
