Interview with Rachel Donnelly, Author of Lady Broke

Please welcome Rachel Donnelly to the virtual offices this morning! Rachel is celebrating the release of her latest romance, Lady Broke. This is a rollicking adventure set in the Wild West.  Check it out!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Rachel Donnelly] I’m a dreamer who believes in following your heart to fulfill your destiny.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Lady Broke?

[Rachel Donnelly] It’s a wild adventure of two unlikely lovers in the Wild West.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Rachel Donnelly] I wanted to write a story about a hero and heroine, who were both used to being in charge, but approach problems in opposite ways and see how that conflict played out.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Christie?

[Rachel Donnelly] She’s a spunky, moral, crusader, but a little naive. Sorry that’s four. LOL.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Nat had a theme song, what would it be?

[Rachel Donnelly] “Wanted Dead or Alive” Bon Jovi

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Christie is never without.

[Rachel Donnelly] Her hat.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Nat’s bedroom?

[Rachel Donnelly] Boy, I could go to some really dark places with that one. LOL A bible-he has no use for one anymore. Clutter- he lives a sparse existence. A full bottle of whiskey- he needs a few shots to sleep at night.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Christie’s greatest regret?

[Rachel Donnelly] She regrets not having taken every opportunity to have fun.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Rachel Donnelly] That’s a tough one. History is a great influence, people and characters that I meet, art theatre, my crazy life, you name it.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Rachel Donnelly] All I need to write is coffee, silence, and time.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What was your biggest distraction while working on Lady Broke?

[Rachel Donnelly] Life is always my biggest distraction, but it’s also my inspiration. My life seems to move from one crisis to another with lots of joy in between. It’s a roller coaster ride. I think we’re all living the same wild dream. My cure is to bury myself in the story between all of my other responsibilities of kids, husband, household and job.

I started writing Lady Broke several years ago when I finaled in the Golden Heart with another book. So I had to block out the excitement and just get back to work.

We all have stories, art, and wonderful creativity churning inside of us. The trick is to be determined and dedicated enough to focus on whatever project you’re working on at the time.
You’ve got to love the process. Writing is like life to me – it’s the journey that’s important.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Rachel Donnelly] Good question. I read a lot of poetry and classics. I’m also a huge Johanna Lindsay fan.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Rachel Donnelly] “Lord of the Flies”

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Rachel Donnelly] Spend time with my family. I’m a big gardener. I also love to shop, decorate, sew—you name it. I’ve always got several projects on the go. I’m a big treasure hunter as well. I love vintage and have tried to keep our big Victorian house on the farm as authentic as possible.

About the book:

East meets west when a high-principled Boston socialite teams up with a revenge driven bounty hunter to catch a gang of outlaws in the wilds of Nevada.

It’s tough being a witness when the last one turned up dead. But Christie Wallace is determined to bring the Everett gang to justice. Unfortunately, the law can’t protect her from pistol-toting outlaws or the intoxicating lure of a dangerous man. But, after escaping the suffocating prospects of an arranged marriage, she has no intention of allowing her heart to rule her head, even when temptation comes in the form of an incorrigible lawman named Nat Randall.

Dead or alive—it made no difference to Nat Randall. He’d tried to bring the Everett gang to trial once before, but the law let him down. It seems frontier justice is all he has left. But he didn’t count on protecting a bewitching Easterner whose courageous spirit challenges him as much as her beauty distracts. It’s not long before he’s torn between pursuing her or the outlaws.

A timeless, rollicking adventure of unlikely lovers, set in the Wild West

Terrific post, though I’m jealous you’re a gardener. The idea always appealed to me but I’ve got no green thumb whatsoever. That aside, your book sounds fun. I wish you the best of luck with it!

What a great interview! Loved those questions. :) I’m a treasure hunter, too, Rachel. I love it when I find something wonderful and rare. And cheap!
