Please give a warm welcome to Karen Amanda Hooper. She’s visiting the virtual offices to talk about her book Grasping at Eternity.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.
[Karen Amanda Hooper] Emotional, creative, hopelessly romantic and always trying to be a better person–even when I fail. Addicted to chocolate. Loves to a fault.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Grasping at Eternity?
[Karen Amanda Hooper] Grasping at Eternity is the first novel I ever wrote. It’s the story of a girl who erased all memory of her soul mate and her supernaturally gifted family whom she had known for centuries. The family is called a kindrily (kindred family). They each have a unique power and they perpetually reincarnate, retaining their memories from every lifetime and remaining bonded through all their lives. The main character, Maryah, is reunited with her kindrily and her soul mate, Nathan, but the reunion is a rocky one and there’s a tragic chance, she may never remember who she is, who Nathan is, or why she erased.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?
[Karen Amanda Hooper] I’m still not sure. lol. They just sort of showed up and wouldn’t get out of my head. They keep revealing more and more of their story to me, and it’s just so interesting and magical that I keep writing about it. I know that sounds sort of crazy, like I’m delusional and believe they are real, but in my imagination they are real so why not share their fantastic story with readers?
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Nathan?
[Karen Amanda Hooper] Heartbroken, loyal, old-fashioned.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Maryah had a theme song, what would it be?
[Karen Amanda Hooper] Believe by Staind
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Nathan is never without.
[Karen Amanda Hooper] Thoughts of Maryah.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Maryah’s bedroom?
[Karen Amanda Hooper] TV, scratchy sheets, high heels.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Nathan’s greatest regret?
[Karen Amanda Hooper] Not stopping Maryah from erasing.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?
[Karen Amanda Hooper] My life experiences and great, emotion-evoking music.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?
[Karen Amanda Hooper] Coffee, chocolate, my laptop.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?
[Karen Amanda Hooper] Oooh, good question. I’ve read so many good books lately, but one that stands out in my mind is Splintered by AG Howard. I loved the spin she put on Wonderland and all its characters.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?
[Karen Amanda Hooper] The Teddy Ruxpin books when I was like 3 or 4 years old. What a cool world Teddy lived in. Rainbow Falls, cute colorful fobs, and flying airships? SOLD.
In my late teens, I read the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon and was forever changed. That woman knows how to tell a story.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?
[Karen Amanda Hooper] I enjoy reading and spending time with my family, friends, and my two spoiled dogs. My fav place to be is Disney World. I live about an hour away so I go there a lot. A LOT. lol.
