[Manga Maniac Café] Can you tell us a little about Haley’s Mountain Man?
[Tracy Madison] Haley’s Mountain Man is, at its heart, a story about two extraordinarily different people with extraordinarily different life experiences, finding each other and falling in love, despite all of the logical reasons they shouldn’t. On the outside, they don’t seem as if they belong together, but on the inside—they’re meant for one another. Only Gavin is dead-and-determined to go it alone, while Haley is equally as determined to prove to him they’re stronger together than they are apart.
[Manga Maniac Café] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?
[Tracy Madison] Typically, my romances have a different dynamic. I’ve normally written heroes who know exactly what they want – the heroine, of course! – and will do anything in their power to win her over. In this case, my heroine is the pursuer. And this is where the concept originally came from. I wanted to turn the tables, so to speak, so then it was only a matter of figuring out the underlying forces that fed the story.
[Manga Maniac Café] What three words best describe Haley?
[Tracy Madison] Impulsive, determined, and secure.
[Manga Maniac Café] If Gavin had a theme song, what would it be?
[Tracy Madison] I’ve thought and thought about this, but can’t come up with a single, specific song. Therefore, I’ll just say it would probably be a country song about not trusting anyone but yourself, because even the thought of relying on any other person is far too dangerous for Gavin’s peace of mind.
[Manga Maniac Café] Name one thing Haley is never without?
[Tracy Madison] Her instincts. She follows her gut before she even thinks of listening to logic!
[Manga Maniac Café] What three things would you never find in Gavin’s bedroom?
[Tracy Madison] Anything sentimental from his past – reminders bring him too much pain, anything frilly or too feminine – Gavin is about as bare-to-the-bones and non-frilly as a guy can get, and a suit. He’s all about flannel and denim, this guy.
[Manga Maniac Café] What is Haley’s greatest regret?
[Tracy Madison] That’s just it—Haley doesn’t have any regrets! She lives by her heart, takes chances, and trusts in the world around her (very different from Gavin, who trusts no one but himself). She lives this way in order to not have regrets.
[Manga Maniac Café] What are your greatest creative influences?
[Tracy Madison] In the greatest definition – people. I’m endlessly curious about what makes people tick, why they behave in certain ways, what has given them the world-view they have. All of my stories begin with the people – the characters – and where they come from, where I believe they’re headed, and what it will take to get them there.
[Manga Maniac Café] What three things do you need in order to write?
[Tracy Madison] Coffee. Lots of coffee. My headphones so I can block out other sounds (typically, I play white noise, such as ocean waves or rainfall, when I’m writing). And plenty of high protein, low-carb snacks nearby, because when I really get going, I tend to keep going and forget to eat!
[Manga Maniac Café] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?
[Tracy Madison] There are many, many stories that feed my creativity, but I’d have to say 11/22/63 by Stephen King. It was a highly complex story with equally complex characters, plot, and motivation that literally kept me reading almost non-stop.
[Manga Maniac Café] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, what would it be?
[Tracy Madison] Far too many to name, so picking one is impossible, but an early love were the books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
[Manga Maniac Café] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?
[Tracy Madison] Spend time with my family above and beyond all else.
[Manga Maniac Café] How can readers connect with you?
[Manga Maniac Café] Thank you!
