Interview with Angela Campbell, Author of On the Scent

Please give a warm welcome to Angela Campbell! She’s here to chat about her Harper Impulse release On the Scent.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Angela Campbell] Pet fanatic. Romance Author. Film buff. Admirer of Men in Tights. All-Around Weirdo.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about On the Scent?

[Angela Campbell] It’s about a hot psychic detective protecting a nurse and her snarky cat and goofy dog, and all kinds of hijinks that happen as a result. Here’s the official blurb:

Hannah Dawson has a big problem: she’s just become the unexpected owner of a snarky cat, a loveable but not-so-bright dog… and their $10 million fortune!

Which would be awesome if it hadn’t made her the target of every wacko in the metro Atlanta area. Now Hannah and her famous pets need protecting and there’s only one man who can help them…

Enter Zachary Collins: ex-TV star of ‘The Psychic Detective’ and street-wise private investigator – all 6-foot, blue-eyed gorgeousness!

Only Zach’s got secrets of his own – not least that he finds his new client irresistibly hot. The more time he spends keeping Hannah out of harm’s way, the more he’s tempted to give in to the attraction… even if it means breaking all his own rules.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Angela Campbell] I read an article about an Italian heiress who left her entire fortune of £10 million to a stray black cat she fed regularly, and her nurse was left in charge of the cat. I’m a huge animal lover, but even I thought, “That’s craaazy!” But as my mind has a tendency to do, it started pinging off ideas for a story in different directions. What if this happened to a nurse here? She might need protection. Oooh, hunky bodyguard! What if he was more than a bodyguard? What if he had psychic abilities and could communicate with the animals? What if the heiress wasn’t who she’d claimed to be? And so on.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Hannah?

[Angela Campbell] Caring, cautious and smart.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Zach had a theme song, what would it be?

[Angela Campbell] Ooh, tough one! I think it would be “Behind Blue Eyes” by The Who, because he’s so misunderstood by some of the people in his life, and that’s fed the way he views himself, too. Plus, he has blue eyes, so… :)

But, I suspect Zach would prefer the Limp Bizkit version though.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Hannah is never without.

[Angela Campbell] Her cell phone — in case someone needs to get in touch with her because of an emergency with her pets!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Zach’s bathroom?

[Angela Campbell] Expensive hair products, pink tiles, or flowers — real or otherwise.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will Costello never, ever eat?

[Angela Campbell] Are you kidding? That dog will eat anything!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Abbott’s favorite activity?

[Angela Campbell] Making Zach’s life difficult by ignoring Zach’s questions, hiding when he’s needed, and playing coy when he’s found.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Angela Campbell] If I get stuck in my writing, I can usually get through it if I watch a good movie or read a great book, so books and movies are huge creative influences in my own writing. There are so many incredible authors I’d like to mention, but it would take up too much space. I also do a lot of reading of magazines, newspapers and headlines because I never know where my next idea will come from.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Angela Campbell] Quiet, a computer and a flash drive to back things up on!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What was your biggest distraction while working on On the Scent?

[Angela Campbell] Life. Life is always the biggest distraction, whether it be in the form of day-job responsibilities, working overtime, family emergencies, or illness. I experienced them all when writing this book.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Angela Campbell] I just finished reading “Tangible” by Jody Wallace, and if you’re a fan of world-building and urban fantasy with your romance, you should read this book. The alpha hero was just…awesome.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Angela Campbell] I remember reading “Ethan Frome” by Edith Wharton in high school and then going to the school library the next day to look for similar books. It was the same with “Wuthering Heights,” so I fell in love with classics before branching out to contemporary books. It wasn’t too long after that I read my first Harlequin novel. The rest is history!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Angela Campbell] I like to chill with my kitty and watch a good movie. And by good, I mean either truly good or just so, so bad it becomes good by making fun of it.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Angela Campbell] I love hearing from readers! As for social media, I’m mostly on twitter @angelacampbel or they can connect with me through my website at www.AngelaCampbellOnline.com, where I’ve also profiled the real-life animals who inspired Abbott and Costello.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!
