[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Liz Carlyle] I always say I’m just a novelist stuck in the 19th century. Beyond that, I’m very dull.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about A Bride by Moonlight?

[Liz Carlyle] I’ve described the book as being a story of redemption, and particularly for my heroine Lisette, that is true. It is also about finding the love of your life. Finding that person who totally gets you, and loves you because—and in spite—of it. We are none of us perfect, and Lisette and Napier definitely fit that description.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Liz Carlyle] Both characters had been in my head for a while, particularly Napier, who was an antagonist in several of my earlier works. I never know how to explain how concepts come to me—they just do. I know that’s vague, and I apologize. I suppose books always begin, for me, with the question, “What if?” And then I’m off and running.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Lisette?

[Liz Carlyle] Determined. Fearless. Audacious.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Napier had a theme song, what would it be?

[Liz Carlyle] Nobody Does It Better by Carly Simon. He’s a perfectionist. In everything.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Lisette is never without.

[Liz Carlyle] Her mother’s gold locket. She had to fight hard for it, so she never takes it off.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Napier’s pockets?

[Liz Carlyle] A snuffbox. An overdue bill. An unused ticket to the opera.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Lisette’s greatest regret?

[Liz Carlyle] I can’t quite tell you her greatest regret since it forms a part of the novel. I can say, however, that she very much regrets not knowing her mother well. The fact that her mother died while she was young has left Lisette with a tremendous void in her life.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Liz Carlyle] Travel to historically significant places, although I travel much less than I once did. And sometimes music.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Liz Carlyle] Total quiet. Eight hours of sleep. A case of 365 club soda.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Liz Carlyle] The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly. It was awesome.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Liz Carlyle] Mistress of Mellyn by Victoria Holt. My BFF and I stole it from her mother’s TBR pile. We were eleven years old, and back in those days Victoria Holt was considered a trifle scandalous.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Liz Carlyle] I spend a lot of time with my extended family, and with my four cats.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Liz Carlyle] Via my website, or on Facebook.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!

[Liz Carlyle] Thank you. It was a pleasure.

Estranged from his aristocratic family, the enigmatic Napier has forged a reputation as Scotland Yard’s most relentless police commissioner.
