Megan Mulry visited the virtual offices to chat about her book, A Royal Pain. Please give her a warm welcome.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.
[Megan Mulry] Writer. Mother. Wife. Love British hotels; French food; Swiss chocolate & tennis players; Italian clothes. Renaissance humanist. Optimist.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about A Royal Pain?
[Megan Mulry] It’s the story of a strong-willed, independent American woman who unwittingly falls for a British duke. She’s obsessed with British culture, but the reality turns out to be more than she bargained for.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?
[Megan Mulry] I was totally immersed in reading Regency romances, and then I decided it would be cool to put a lot of the Regency elements into a contemporary setting (balls, royalty, British high society). The characters came out of that idea–how would a modern, accomplished American woman integrate into that world? What would a modern duke be like? It all sort of came together from there.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Bronte?
[Megan Mulry] Feisty. Eager. Loving.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three activities would Max never engage in?
[Megan Mulry] Gossip. Shouting. Moral ambiguity.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Max had a theme song, what would it be?
[Megan Mulry] "I’ll stop the world and melt with you"
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the one accessory Bronte won’t leave the house without?
[Megan Mulry] Love this…her obnoxiously large purse, of course.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?
[Megan Mulry] Other writers. Lately I am reading as many vintage Harlequin Presents as I can get my hands on (Violet Winspear, Anne Hampsen, Anne Mather). These books are incredible examples of how to pare down plot and character to pure emotion.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?
[Megan Mulry] Coffee. MacBook Air. Coffee.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?
[Megan Mulry] Violet Winspear’s Cap Flamingo.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?
[Megan Mulry] Alice Walker’s The Color Purple
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?
[Megan Mulry] Read. Go to thrift shops. Go to the beach with my family. Go out to dinner with friends. For longer stretches, I love to travel (but I usually end up writing while I’m traveling, so not sure that counts!)
[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?
[Megan Mulry] Yes please! I have a web page at www.meganmulry.com and then the usual places: I have a WordPress blog, a Goodreads page, a Facebook page, and spend way too much time on Twitter.
Thank you for having me!!
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!
