Interview with Sara Daniel, Author of Construction Beauty Queen and Giveaway!

Sara Daniel is visiting the virtual offices today to chat about her new book, Construction Beauty Queen.  Please give her a warm welcome!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Sara Daniel] Sincere, reliable, hopeful. Wife, mother, writer. Determined dreamer. Author of irresistible romance and captivating small-town drama.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Construction Beauty Queen?

[Sara Daniel] Chicago socialite Veronica Jamison is determined to shake off her sheltered lifestyle and overbearing parents. She heads to her grandfather’s small town of Kortville, ready to roll up her sleeves and work for the family construction business. She’ll prove her worth, even if it means answering to the company’s ruggedly handsome co-owner, Matt.

Matt Shaw just wants to run his business, spend time with the niece he’s raising on his own, and give back to the townspeople who have stood by him. Managing a spoiled-rotten princess he knows he’ll never be good enough for? Not part of his plan. But as he gets to know Veronica, he learns there’s more to her than her beautiful looks and designer clothes. She’s got a heart as rich as her background.

With the quirky townspeople rallying against Veronica inheriting her grandfather’s business, it’s up to Matt to try to drive her out of town. But how can he, when instead she’s driving her way into his heart?

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Sara Daniel] Growing up in a small town where my parents have a small business was a big inspiration for me. I love stories where everyone is always in everyone’s business, helping the hero and heroine get to happily-ever-after or stirring up to trouble to make the path more difficult. I love reading small-town stories, and I loved writing this one!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Veronica?

[Sara Daniel] Determined, self-motivated, friendly

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If Matt had a theme song, what would it be?

[Sara Daniel] Guys Like Me by Eric Church – This country song talks about a rough-around-the-edges small-town man who falls for a high-class woman who “has her pick of all the trust-fund types” and chooses to be with him.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing Veronica won’t leave the house without.

[Sara Daniel] Definitely something in her signature pink color. She won’t leave without putting on lipstick either.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things will you never find in Matt’s bedroom?

[Sara Daniel] Makeup, glitter and high heels. If it’s “girlie,” he doesn’t want anything to do with it!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Sara Daniel] I started out reading Nora Roberts, Elizabeth Lowell, Sandra Brown, Johanna Lindsey, Suzanne Brockmann, and Susan Elizabeth Phillips, among others. I love the emotional ride and memorable characters their stories are filled with, and I hope readers find the same escape when they pick up one of my books.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Sara Daniel] · A keyboard — I use a pen and paper for brainstorming, but for actual writing I need to type.

· A window – If I can’t be outside, I need to stare at the trees and sky to really get my creative juices flowing.

· Coffee — self-explanatory!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Sara Daniel] My all-time favorite hero is Kenny Karmody from Suzanne Brockmann’s Out of Control. That mix of sweet, vulnerable, tough, fearless, and irreverent made me fall head-over-heels in love. Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ First Lady is probably the book that truly “knocked my socks off” because every single character captivated me on every single page. When I finished that book for the first time, I turned to page one and immediately started reading it again.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Sara Daniel] I’ve always been an avid reader, so I don’t have one defining book that I can point to. I do remember reading the Laura Ingles Wilder series as I child and loving Laura’s character so much that I read the books over and over.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Sara Daniel] I like to go for long walks and hikes. I get a lot of good ideas when I’m alone with my thoughts. I have three school-age children, so most of my non-writing time is spent being a mom.
