[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Rogue Countess?
[Amy Sandas] Rogue Countess is a Regency Historical Romance and tells the story of the tumultuous reunion between the Earl and Countess of Blackbourne eight years after their forced marriage.
Anna spent years building her independence and guarding her heart against the judgment of society to ensure that she is never again in a position to be betrayed and abandoned. Accustomed to being in control, she is utterly unprepared for her ordered world to be flipped on its head when her errant husband returns to England. It has been years since he left her on their wedding day, but she is no longer that sad little girl and this time she will not so easily be cast aside.
Jude Sinclair, Earl of Blackbourne, has come home for two reasons: to pick up the reins of responsibility left to him upon his father’s death and to put an end to his farce of a marriage once and for all. To his surprise, the wicked and deceitful young woman he expects is not exactly the wife he finds. One thing he knows without doubt is that her striking beauty and dark gaze shields secrets he is determined to uncover.
With a shared past tangled in lies and blackmail, Anna and Jude declare an intimate war of wills, each determined to hold their ground even as unexpected passion ignites into bold desire. In order to claim the love that could be theirs, they must overcome their mutual distrust and destroy the obstacles that loom darkly between them.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?
[Amy Sandas] This story idea began with a scene in which Anna is hiding in a crowded ballroom, waiting to catch a glimpse of the husband who had abandoned her. Initially, I didn’t know how they had married or why he had left, but I knew that Anna was going to be strong-willed, a bit of a loner, and that she was going to go against the grain of social standards. I wanted Jude to be a perfect balance to her nature, even though they wouldn’t realize this until they were able to get past the circumstances of their marriage. The rest of the story really grew from there.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Anna?
[Amy Sandas] Unconventional. Determined. Guarded.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are three things Anna would never have in her boudoir?
[Amy Sandas] French perfume. Poetry by Lord Byron. Anything related to her business (“ a place for everything…”).
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Jude’s single most prized possession?
[Amy Sandas] His father’s pocket watch.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?
[Amy Sandas] I was first introduced to Historical Romance through Johanna Lindsey’s Gentle Rogue. Her writing was probably the most influential in the development of my love of historical romances and my desire to write my own. I have also been inspired by the work of Lisa Kleypas, Christina Dodd, Brenda Joyce and so many others!
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?
[Amy Sandas] My morning coffee (black). My husband to distract the kids. Time.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?
[Amy Sandas] Oddly, the answer to this isn’t a romance novel! My eight year old daughter recently convinced me to read the first three books in the Warriors series by Erin Hunter about four clans of wild cat warriors. She was totally infatuated with the stories and wanted someone to talk to about all the characters and clan intrigue involved in the books. I read all three within a couple days. I just could not put them down!!
[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?
[Amy Sandas] When I was little, I was in love with the Ramona series by Beverly Cleary. I completely identified with Ramona. That was when I first learned how you could escape into someone else’s story and live it as if it were your own. I have been an avid reader ever since!
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?
[Amy Sandas] I love to spend a little leisure time with my family. Summers in the backyard, going for a walk to our favorite restaurant (I love to eat out. No cooking, no clean up!), camping trips. In the winter we tend to hibernate a bit and don’t get out and about as much.
