Interview with Meghan Ciana Doidge, Author of Spirit Binder

Meghan Ciana Doidge is the author of Spirit Binder, the kick off for her Cascadian Chronicles. Meghan dropped by the virtual offices to introduce herself and share some info about her book.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Meghan Ciana Doidge] Hmmm, I’m a writer, knitter, baker, & gardener. I create stories constantly, and must eat chocolate every day or collapse from withdrawal.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Spirit Binder?

[Meghan Ciana Doidge] Spirit Binder is my second novel and the first of my series, the Cascadian Chronicles. I wrote the entire first draft by hand each day until my hand cramped or my shoulder seized. I started with the opening scene and let it carry me into the remainder of the story. Partway through I realized it was going to be an ongoing series, seen through the eyes of different narrators for each book. But, Theo, the main character of Spirit Binder, and the events of the first novel, are the lynch pins.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Meghan Ciana Doidge] I wrote it out and found the story as I wrote. I started with the idea of losing ten years of your life, and waking up to find out you are kind of a big deal, but don’t really want to be. The world of Spirit Binder grew up around the character of Theo. It was created to support the idea of her. Then I set it in a location I knew well (because I am blessed to stare at it through my office window everyday) to give it a solid footing.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Theo?

[Meghan Ciana Doidge] Hmmm… spiritual, brave, and caring.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is Theo’s single most prized possession?

[Meghan Ciana Doidge] I don’t think she has one … though there is a magic carpet …

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?

[Meghan Ciana Doidge] I am influenced by everything around me … I think I am a bit of a sponge that way. However, if I need inspiration, if I am in a rut, I love to go on a car trip somewhere breathtaking. I am lucky to live where I do and can drive in just about any direction and see amazing scenery: mountains, ocean, forests, and rivers. I crank the music – I make playlists for each story I write – and let the visual backdrop lull me and then guide me back into the story.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?

[Meghan Ciana Doidge] Chocolate, music, and a moment to breathe in the story.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What is the last book that you read that knocked your socks off?

[Meghan Ciana Doidge] Blood Red Road.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Meghan Ciana Doidge] Gone With The Wind.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Meghan Ciana Doidge] I knit and bake, or garden (in season). I consume a large amount of entertainment: books, film and tv.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?
