[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.
[Shawntelle Madison] A computer geek who loves good books, chocolate, and cool fall days. Even happier when I get those all at once.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Coveted?
[Shawntelle Madison] Coveted is about Natalya Stravinsky, a werewolf with holiday trinket hoarding obsession whose life changes when her ex-boyfriend returns to town to save the South Toms River pack. Even though Thorn left five years ago, Nat and Thorn must work through their feelings for each other.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?
[Shawntelle Madison] The idea for Coveted came from one of my husband’s medical journals. One of them had a feature article about obsessive compulsive disorders. It went in-depth on the symptoms and treatments plans. I remember thinking as I read, I wonder what would happen if a werewolf had OCD? What would be the ramifications? After that Natalya was born. Her story and secondary characters came to life as I wrote the story.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What was the most challenging aspect of writing the story?
[Shawntelle Madison] For me, the hardest part of writing is staying on track actually. Sometimes when I get started I have so much fun, I have what I call an "oh-shiny" moment. There are several scenes that didn’t make it into the final book where Nat had some really fun adventures. Hopefully, I’ll be able to share them one day.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three words best describe Nat?
[Shawntelle Madison] Loyal. Neurotic. Sarcastic.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are three things Thorn would never have in his bedroom?
[Shawntelle Madison] That’s easy. Satin sheets (Egyptian cotton all the way.) A hamper. (The floor or a corner works just as good, right?) And finally, you wouldn’t find a brush. (’Cause hair that gorgeous simply needs a nice breeze to look just right.)
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are your greatest creative influences?
[Shawntelle Madison] First, I’d definitely say the late Octavia Butler. I read her books while in high school and she opened a new world of sci-fi/fantasy for me. She made me think, if Octavia can write such great books, maybe I can too. In terms of writing new material, my music is my muse. When I need to feel a specific emotion, music does a fantastic job to bring me to the moment to write the right words.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What three things do you need in order to write?
[Shawntelle Madison] My laptop, Write or Die by Dr. Wicked, and Diet Cherry Coke Zero. (I used to need Jelly Belly Jelly Beans but I’ve weaned myself off those.)
[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?
[Shawntelle Madison] My mother is an avid reader. She reads very fast. I remember picking up her romance novels and reading them. One book that immediately comes to mind is LaVyrle Spencer’s Morning Glory. Such a good book. If I wanted to go back even further, I’d say Box Car Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner.
[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?
[Shawntelle Madison] I’m a slow reader, so I try to read when I can. When I’m not reading, I’m making tools for writers on my author website, doing freelance work as a web developer, or I’m watching dramas from Korea. I love watching K-dramas! Once in a while I even love to sneak in a horror movie or some anime.
