[Allison Pang] Author. Word Whore. Hello Kitty Connoisseur.
[Manga Maniac Café] Can you tell us a little about your book, A Sliver of Shadows?
[Allison Pang] A Sliver of Shadow takes place about 6 months after the end of A Brush of Darkness. Abby has settled into her life as TouchStone to Moira, the Faery Protectorate of Portsmyth. Between learning the ropes of managing the day-to-day concerns of the local population of OtherFolk, living with a certain obnoxious panty-sniffing unicorn and babysitting Moira’s son, she somehow finds the time to train in the Dreaming with the succubus, Sonja as well as becomes the town’s go-to girl for OtherFolk advice.
Along the way she’s acquired a sexy bodyguard in the form of Moira’s brother, an elf with tragic past and a penchant for burning the morning coffee.
Melanie, Brandon, Charlie and Robert are all back along for the ride…as well as Brystion, Abby’s former incubus lover.
When Moira is called away to the Faerie Court on business, a new Protectorate appears. When Abby and the gang refuse to give her what she wants, all hell breaks loose and it’s up to Abby to clean up the mess…
[Manga Maniac Café] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for your Abby Sinclair series?
[Allison Pang] A lot of different places. A few of the characters (Robert, Charlie and Melanie) actually showed up in a short story I attempted to write in college that was subsequently eaten by a corrupt floppy disk. Phineas and Talivar were actually inspired by characters of the same name that I ran in online Play by Post games (although heavily changed/modified for the novels – they really aren’t the same people at all.)
Abby and Brystion were originals from the start, although the original storyline of A Brush of Darkness was initially inspired by a dream. The overall lore and worldbuilding was influenced by the Thomas the Rhymer poem by True Thomas. (Albeit my own interpretation of it.)
[Manga Maniac Café] What has been your greatest challenge writing the series so far?
[Allison Pang] Just finding the time to get to write, period. I’ve got a day job and small kids and as a midlist author, I tend to have to do a lot of my own promo as well. (Lots of social networking.) Somehow I manage.
[Manga Maniac Café] What made you write an urban fantasy series in the first place?
[Allison Pang] I actually wrote A Brush of Darkness as a Paranormal Romance. After it sold I was asked to make it into more of a UF – which turned out to be a much better fit for me, writing-wise. I’m a big fan of epic/high fantasy or fantasy in general and this way I wasn’t as limited by some of the romance rules. (i.e. requiring a Happily Ever After, etc.)
[Manga Maniac Café] Name three things Abby would never have in her purse.
[Allison Pang] Heh. I’m not sure she even carries a purse, so that’s a moot question. Sometimes she carries a backpack with Phin in it. Not sure there’s room for much else. (Or if I’d trust anything in there with him.)
[Manga Maniac Café] What are your greatest creative influences?
[Allison Pang] Anything that inspires me – music, other books or movies, people watching, whatever.
[Manga Maniac Café] What three things do you need in order to write?
[Allison Pang] Music. My netbook. Internet. (Though that last one is more of a distraction really – I’m thinking more for research purposes.)
[Manga Maniac Café] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?
[Allison Pang] Hmmm. Not sure if I can pick one. I’ve always been a reader. I was reading the newspaper by age 5 at least, and my mother says I was reading to her at the age of 2 or 3 in the doctor’s office, so maybe it was just something I picked up.
[Manga Maniac Café] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?
[Allison Pang] Gaming – RPGs or MMOs, mostly. I haven’t had as much time recently to game as much as I’d like, but I’ll go on weekend binges once in a while. Otherwise, I love to read and cross-stitch.
[Manga Maniac Café] Thanks!
