[Manga Maniac Café] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.
[Sabine A Reed] I’m a fantasy writer and my debut e-fantasy novella The Black Orb has been released from Uncial Press in October 2011.
[Manga Maniac Café] Can you tell us a little about your book, The Black Orb?
[Sabine A Reed] The Black Orb is Aria’s story. She is a young conniving thief and a con artist, living in the city of Kalaba. When her brother Marcus is taken prisoner by the Queen of Azmeer, Aria embarks on a desperate quest to free him. To save her brother, she has to enlist the help of an old wizard, Bikkar, who is critical of her thieving habits. The way to sever the power of the Queen is to break her magical weapon, the Black Orb, with which she plans to enslave not only her own subjects but other kingdoms also. In order to gain access to the Dragon Claw, the only weapon that can destroy the Black Orb, Aria has to travel with Bikkar to the end of the kingdom and enter the mythical Forest of the Drayds, fight with the stone warriors and endure the company of the old man whom she secretly despises.

[Manga Maniac Café] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?
[Sabine A Reed] It’s an interesting question. I wanted to write about a female hero who could kick ass, was independent and strong – and hence was born the idea of a thief and con artist who proves that when it comes right down to it, she is capable of making the right choices (much to her own surprise.)
[Manga Maniac Café] What was the most challenging aspect of writing the book?
[Sabine A Reed] Since I was writing as a hobby at that time, the hardest part was to sit down every day and finish it. Now I write every day. It’s all about discipline and willpower, and the determination to make a career out of a hobby.
[Manga Maniac Café] Which of your characters are you most like?
[Sabine A Reed] It’s hard to say because I did not base any of my characters on myself. But I love my female protagonist Aria, and wish I could be as brutally honest as her.
[Manga Maniac Café] What are your greatest creative influences?
[Sabine A Reed] I love reading, and writing was a natural transition. Reading inspires me to write more.
[Manga Maniac Café] What three things you need in order to write?
[Sabine A Reed] My laptop, a chair and desk. (It helps if the children are in school, but if not, I can pretty much write anywhere.)
[Manga Maniac Café] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?
[Sabine A Reed] I don’t remember the first book I ever read. But among my favorite were Enid Blyton’s books.
[Manga Maniac Café] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?
[Sabine A Reed] Read, spend time with my kids and watch TV.
[Manga Maniac Café] Thank you!
