Interview with Kylie Griffin, Author of Vengeance Born

Kylie Griffin is a debut author, and her first book, Vengeance Born, is scheduled to drop February 2012.  I am really looking forward to reading Kylie’s book, so to hold off some of the anticipation, I invited her to the virtual offices to tell us about her book.

[Manga Maniac Café] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Kylie Griffin] Obsessive writer, goal-orientated, quirky, stubborn, a risk-taker, a dreamer, a cat-slave and unashamed chocoholic.

[Manga Maniac Café] Can you tell us a little about your book, Vengeance Born?

[Kylie Griffin] With VENGEANCE BORN you get all the fantasy elements, as in a cast of characters, plot archetypes, world-building, magic, etc. yet with the additional element of a romance thrown into the mix, and you end up exploring the gamut of relationships – political, social and romantic – the best of all worlds in my stories (no pun intended *grin*).

This is the back cover blurb …

There is no mercy in the demon realm. No escape. In this place of desperation and conflict, anyone who is not pure bred is virtually powerless. Until an unlikely champion is born…

Annika, half-blood daughter of the Na’Reish King, longs for more than her tormented life among her father’s people. Conceived in hatred and bred as a tool of retribution, she’s gifted with a special talent that can heal as well as destroy.

With the Na’Reish vastly outnumbering them, Kalan, a Light Blade warrior, knows the future of humankind depends on him alone. Incursions into human territory and raids for blood-slaves by the Na’Reish Horde have increased. As Chosen-leader, he faces the task of stopping the demons, and convincing the Council of aging Light Blade warriors that change is necessary for survival.

When Annika learns Kalan is a prisoner in her father’s dungeon, her dream of escape seems within reach. She agrees to free him in exchange for his protection once they reach human territory. Now, marked for death for helping him, Annika must learn to trust Kalan as they face not only the perilous journey to the border but enemies within the Council, and discover a shocking truth that could throw the human race into civil war…

VENGEANCE BORN will be released on February 7th, 2012, from Berkley Sensation. You can read a chapter excerpt of the book here

[Manga Maniac Café] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Kylie Griffin] With VENGEANCE BORN I saw the character of Annika first.

In the opening scene of the book, she descends into her father’s dungeon, excited yet also apprehensive about meeting her first human Light Blade warrior, a man gifted with a kinetic power who can kill demons using any metal weapon as a conduit. She’s gifted with a similar skill but is able to kill or heal with a touch.

So, that scenario raised a number of what if questions. What if demons and humans once lived together peacefully? What would happen if they ended up at war with one another? How would a hybrid child be viewed in such a situation? What if these half-caste children were gifted with special talents? What if there was some sort of symbiotic relationship between these three races that was essential to their survival? The story just evolved from there.

[Manga Maniac Café] What have you learned about yourself through your characters?

[Kylie Griffin] Hmm, good question. Many of the characters I write about have fought to achieve their dreams. I guess what they’ve taught me is to do the same and that’s it’s OK to accept help to achieve them rather than do it all on my own.

[Manga Maniac Café] Which of your characters are you most like?

[Kylie Griffin] I suspect there’s a little bit of each of them in me! 🙂 They all have traits I admire and aspire to, things like being honest, loyal, loving, fiercely protective of those I love, determined…and I guess I have some of their flaws too – stubborn, quick tempered, perfectionist tendencies…LOL.

[Manga Maniac Café] Why do you think books with fantasy and paranormal elements are so popular with readers?  What do you like best about them?

[Kylie Griffin] The pure escapism of reading and writing about characters who exist in an imaginary world, the vast scope of story lines, the human to non-human range of characters, the development of a romance and the challenge of making everything so real as to suspend a reader’s disbelief. I just love it! And as a reader, I know I love disappearing into such a world with these sorts of characters.

[Manga Maniac Café] Can you describe a typical day in your life?

[Kylie Griffin] I’m a teacher by day, so most of my daylight hours are focused on the classroom, my students and all the administration that goes with that.

My day usually begins at 4 am. I get up to write for a few hours before heading off to school. Once I get home from school I usually dive right into editing what I wrote that morning.

Interspersed with that are any emergency call outs I might receive. Living in a geographically isolated rural area of Australia, I volunteer as a fire-fighter, a State Emergency Service member (helping in floods/storms, road crash rescue, search & rescue), and I’ve also received training as a junior ambulance officer. We receive anywhere between 2-6 call outs a month and with all emergency services over an hour away these organizations and its volunteers are essential. I enjoy the challenge of the training and get a lot of satisfaction out of helping others.

[Manga Maniac Café] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

[Kylie Griffin] Oh, that would have to be Anne McCaffrey’s DRAGONFLIGHT, the first book in her Pern series. Her world building and the characters of Lessa, F’lar and how they communicate telepathically with their dragons just sucked me right in!

[Manga Maniac Café] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Kylie Griffin] Other than the time spent with the myriad of volunteer organizations I’m involved with? 🙂 Reading, of course, pottering in my garden, and I also love to create patchwork quilts. I also have three cats who keep me on my toes.

[Manga Maniac Café] Thanks!!

[Kylie Griffin] Thank you for inviting me to be your guest – it’s been a hoot!

Kylie – here I was thinking that I couldn’t love you more and then I discover that you’re an Anne McCaffery fan! Anyway, I’m so excited that your books are coming out! I judged them numerous times over the years in RWNZ competitions and never had any doubt that you would be published! Anyway, great interview!

    Hi Kylie

The book sounds so exciting and as I’ve read the first chapter, I’m looking forward to having the full book to read.

You’ve worked hard and deserve every success. Best wishes

Hi Amanda, Anne McCaffrey is a goddess of authors! I have worn out a lot of the spines on her books on my shelf. I can still remember the day I found DRAGONFLIGHT in a box of books at a farm clearing sale. I devoured it that evening!
Thanks for judging my work! 🙂 I’m so glad you’ll get to see one of the entries in print! Here’s to all of them making it to the shelves.

Hi Bron, thanks for the vote of confidence! You and I both as to the can’t wait to see the book in the flesh.

Hey, Kylie and MMC! Great interview!

Kylie, you’ve got an impressive number of strings to your bow and I just know that best-selling author is going to be the next one! I can’t wait for your book to hit the shelves DownUnder!

Sometimes those strings get a little tangles, Sharon, 🙂 but I’d rather be busy than bored. I’m also looking forward to seeing VB on the shelves! Been waiting a looooooonnnnnnggggg time for this! (as you know) 😀

Hi Kylie and MMC – that was a fun interview, thanks!

I’m eagerly awaiting my copy of VB too. The blurb and that magnificent cover sucked me in. Can’t wait to see it sitting and looking so pretty on my shelf (after I’ve devoured it of course!) 🙂 Roll on February!!

Hi LaVerne, thank you for pre-ordering VB! It’s an exiting feeling knowing people have done that based on the cover & blurb, not even a sneak peek at the writing. 🙂
