Janette Kenny is the author of several cowboy books, including the soon to be released Cowboy Come Home. Janette stopped by the virtual offices to chat up, what else, cowboys!
[Manga Maniac Café] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.
[Janette Kenny] I was born and raised on a farm. Like many young girls I was horse crazy and have the ribbons to prove it. Though I’m a city girl now, I’m still very much a country girl at heart.
[Manga Maniac Café] Can you tell us a little about your new book, Cowboy Come Home?
[Janette Kenny] Cowboy Come Home is the last book in the Lost Sons Trilogy. This is Trey’s story, the youngest of three foster brothers raised in an orphanage.
Closer than brothers, bonded forever after growing up in an orphanage, three best friends set out to become cowboys, not knowing destiny would also make them heroes. But one fatal betrayal divides them, and now each man must face the West alone.
[Manga Maniac Café] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?
[Janette Kenny] Kate Duffy and Hilary Sares challenge me to come up with a cowboy trilogy along the lines of Linda Lael Miller’s Orphan Trail trilogy. I liked the idea of orphaned boys bonding as brothers, and the idea just grew from there.
[Manga Maniac Café] Why did you decide to use a historical setting, and how did you research the time period?
[Janette Kenny] All of my cowboy books have been historicals — the late Victorian period is one I really enjoy reading and writing about. My research was a combination of going to the actual locations and walking the ground my characters had, and intense internet research. I also have a fairly extensive library of western research books.
[Manga Maniac Café] What do enjoy best about writing romances?
[Janette Kenny] I love taking characters on the journey to love, to reaffirm that there really is a happy ever after there for most people. We just have to find the right partner.
[Manga Maniac Café] What are some book release events that you are anticipating?
[Janette Kenny] I have a book signing scheduled Nov 12 at the Books a Million in Kansas City KS (It’s at the Legends if folks are familiar with that shopping area.) I’ll also give away books in November on Jaunty Quills blog to celebrate the release of Cowboy Come Home.
[Manga Maniac Café] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?
[Janette Kenny] Hummingbird by Lavyrle Spencer
[Manga Maniac Café] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?
[Janette Kenny] Read, shop, walk, take in a movie, dinner out, dancing. I really just like to get away from the keyboard and move!
[Manga Maniac Café] Now for some cowboy specific questions – What makes cowboys so sexy?
[Janette Kenny] It’s the swagger and that bit of rebel that’s in all cowboys.
[Manga Maniac Café] Can you share 5 reasons why you love cowboys:
[Janette Kenny] 1- Hard working — who doesn’t like a ripped lean body honed from hoisting saddles, hay, grain and various critters? Tanned muscular chests, long lean legs, strong arms.
2- Most are a gentleman at heart, and are gentle men. They don’t abuse kids, animals or women.
3- They are their own men, a breed apart from the others. They don’t worry what other people think about them.
4- Their quiet strength. Watch a real cowboy at work and you see poetry in motion.
5- Determination. When they set their mind on a job or a woman, they don’t stop until the job is done and the woman is in their arms.
[Manga Maniac Café] Where is the best place to hook up with an eligible cowboy?
[Janette Kenny] You want to catch a cowboy you’d better step foot in his world. Spend time at a real working ranch, or a local rodeo. Get involved volunteering to help there and the cowboys will take notice.
[Manga Maniac Café] Once you catch a cowboy’s eye, how do you keep it focused on you?
[Janette Kenny] Don’t play mind games. Don’t push. Don’t cling.
[Manga Maniac Café] What’s your favorite article of cowboy clothing?
[Janette Kenny] Ooo, that’s a tough one. I live in jeans, and I own far too many pairs of cowboy boots. Did I mention I’m a cowgirl?
[Manga Maniac Café] Is there a special cowboy in your life?
[Janette Kenny] I’m working on that one.
[Manga Maniac Café] Thanks!
