Cowboy Crush Interview with Carolyn Brown, Author of Darn Good Cowboy Christmas and Giveaway!

Updated October 13 – Extra! Extra!! Carolyn will be giving away an autographed copy of LOVE DRUNK COWBOY, the first book in the Spikes & Spurs series, to a random commenter at the end of the day!  Just make a comment for a chance to win her book!  Easy-peasy!!

Carolyn Brown is a prolific writer with over 50 books to her credit.  She mixes humor and lightning quick banter with sizzling romance, so of course I had to invite her to chat up her books, and discover some of the reasons why she finds cowboys so sexy.

[Manga Maniac Café] Can you tell us about yourself?

[Carolyn Brown] I’m a full time writer with 53 published books. Nine have been translated into foreign languages, fourteen reprinted in large print, two in manga format (Love is the Answer and The Wager) and there are eight more contracted which will see publication in 2012 and 2013. My books have been reviewed in PW, Booklist, Library Journal, RT, Affaire de Coeur and dozens of other places and recently made the New York Times and the USA Today best seller lists. I’m also a full time wife to Husband who goes by Charles Brown on legal papers, mother to three grown kids, Lemar, Amy and Ginny, and grandmother to too many to count.

[Manga Maniac Café] Can you tell us a little about your new book, Darn Good Cowboy Christmas?

[Carolyn Brown] Raylen O’Donnell is one smokin’ hot Texas cowboy. He could have any woman he wants, but he’s never been able to forget a certain dark haired girl who disappeared from his life.  So when she suddenly returns to the ranch next door, Raylen is not about to let her get away from him again.

Liz Hanson has been raised in a traveling carnival and lived in a travel trailer her whole life. All she ever asked for Christmas was a house with no wheels and a sexy cowboy for her very own. Then her Uncle Haskell gave her a house and twenty acres and right across the fence was Raylen O’Donnell. Settling down will take some getting used to and catching Raylen might make for some holiday magic. And Liz is determined to do both by Christmas.

[Manga Maniac Café] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Carolyn Brown] My editor called me and said she wanted a Christmas book for 2011 and of course I said I’d write one. The only problem was which one of the O’Donnells would be my hero, or would it be one of the sisters, Colleen or Gemma as a heroine. That afternoon Husband and I were driving out west of town and there was a carnival setting up and in a flash the whole story came to me. It was Raylen’s story and the lady from the carnival was named Lizelle, Liz for short. It wasn’t until I helped her unpack at the house that I realized she was a belly dancer.

[Manga Maniac Café] What do you find so appealing about cowboys?

[Carolyn Brown] You mean besides their sex appeal, right? How much room do you have for this comment? Okay, they are trustworthy. They treat their women with respect and protect them. They LIKE to dance and I did mention sexy, didn’t I? They wear those tight fittin’ jeans really well and they have hard bodies from physical work, and did I mention sexy? Oh, and they listen when a woman talks.

[Manga Maniac Café] What do you enjoy best about writing romances?

[Carolyn Brown] All of it from start to finish! I love the first few paragraphs of the story when the characters and I are settling in to know each other. I love the middle and the end when they reach their HEA and everyone sighs and wishes for another page or two. I even love the next book when I can give the same characters a cameo appearance or two.

But what I enjoy most is the fan mail from my readers when they write to say that I made them laugh, cry and wish they could find a cowboy of their own. Recently, a fan wrote to say that now every man she dated had to measure up to Rye O’Donnell from Love Drunk Cowboy.

[Manga Maniac Café] What are some fall releases that you are anticipating?

[Carolyn Brown] Darn Good Cowboy Christmas is the only 2011 fall release I have with hot cowboys. However, I do have a couple of sweet romances from Avalon coming out this fall. In October, The Ladies Room, a single title contemporary will be published and in December, A Forever Thing, the debut of the Three Magic Words trilogy, will be published. Confession: there is a rancher in A Forever Thing that easily passes for a cowboy.

But next spring, One Hot Cowboy Wedding, will be coming and then there are three more Spikes & Spurs planned after that with steamy hot cowboys in all of them. And also next fall (2012) Sourcebooks will publish my first woman’s fiction, Sinful Delights. So there’s lots more cowboys on the way!

[Manga Maniac Café] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Carolyn Brown] Husband is now retired so we enjoy short impromptu trips, mostly for research. I love to read and will read everything from the back of the cereal box to Faulkner and love it all. Romance authors that I like are LaVyrle Spencer, Nora (the queen of romance) Roberts, Joanne Kennedy, Mary Kay Andrews and a whole host of others. I also like Carl Hiaason, Randy Wayne White, Sue Grafton, John Grisham and Patricia Cornwell. I didn’t mention that I’m a very eclectic reader, didn’t I?

[Manga Maniac Café] Thank you!

    Good morning!
How’s everyone doing this fine fall morning. We are so happy to see cooler weather and even a little bit of rain here in southern Oklahoma that we could dance a jig!
I’ll be in and out all day so if you’ve got questions I’ll be very glad to answer them! I’m fresh out of copies of Darn Good Cowboy but to all those who will comment, I’ll toss your name into a hat and pull one out at the end of the day for an authographed copy of a copy of LOVE DRUNK COWBOY, the first one in the Spikes & Spurs series!

Joanne, thank you for stopping by and for reading my books, but most of all for being my fellow “smut” peddler. Hey, everyone, Joanne is a cowboy romance author, too, and a RITA finalist (I’m swooning). Her hot cowboys live in Wyoming and mine in Texas!
