Manga Maniac Café: Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.
Bonnie Ferrante: Buddhist, Canadian, creator, emotional, friend, funny, mentor, mother, nature-lover, northerner, seeker, teacher, thinker, wife, writer.
Manga Maniac Café: Can you tell us a little about your book, Dawn’s End?
Bonnie Ferrante: Although it is classified as a romance, I see it first as a fantasy. It is the story of a young woman whose confidence and trust have been shattered by a deep betrayal. By taking physical and emotional risks, she has the opportunity to regain these and help an entire world.
Manga Maniac Café: How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?
Bonnie Ferrante: I wrote the first two chapters the day after I saw the first Beauty and Beast television program. Over the four months, I finished the first draft. I worked on it several times but was never happy with the ending. I tossed it and left it for many years. After a turning point in my own life, my writing was revived and rejuvenated. I was suddenly able to complete the book to my satisfaction.
Manga Maniac Café: What have you learned about yourself through your characters?
Bonnie Ferrante: Trust is terrifying after you have been deeply hurt by someone you loved but it is only by taking great risks and recognizing your own strengths that you can live life to the fullest.
Manga Maniac Café: What character traits, good or bad, do you share with Nicole?
Bonnie Ferrante: I can be very unsure and hesitant with others and then, at other times, be outgoing and social. I’m not athletic but I have surprised myself at times.
Manga Maniac Café: What was the most challenging aspect of writing the book?
Bonnie Ferrante: The ending was going nowhere for years. I finally realized that I was writing Nicole’s life the way I was living mine, with duty but no joy. After major changes in my life, I was able to give Dawn’s End the conclusion it needed.
Manga Maniac Café: If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?
Bonnie Ferrante: From the time I was three, I wanted to read so badly I would pretend that I could. I remember loving The Little Red Hen because she showed the other animals that everyone has a limit – she was nice but she had spunk. My grade school favorites were Heidi and The Incredible Journey.
Manga Maniac Café: What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?
Bonnie Ferrante: I love working in my yard. Garden season is so short, I try to take full advantage of it. I used to love hiking but problems with my feet have changed that to biking. Now my husband and I canoe in order to reach the quiet, natural places in the wild.
