Interview with Lisa Kuehne, Author of True Intentions

Lisa Kuehne is the author of True Intentions, a YA paranormal romance with star-crossed lovers. I love stories with this trope, so I was eager to have Lisa stop by the virtual offices and tell us more about her book.

[Manga Maniac Café] Describe yourself in 140 characters or less.

[Lisa Kuehne] Spunky and stubborn are the first words that come to mind. Others: Outgoing, Big-Sister, Friend, Animal-Lover, Trustworthy, Generous, Mello, Spontaneous, and Adventurous. Maybe that’s why I like writing YA—I’m still a kid in many ways!

[MMC] Can you tell us a little about your book, True Intentions?

Sixteen year old Ava O’Brian doesn’t know she possesses a rare and unique gift—a soul with the ability to influence mankind. When she relocates to Lake Arrowhead, not only does she have to fit in at a school reminding her of Junior Hollywood, but she also comes face to face with the ultimate temptation—mysterious and gorgeous classmate Samuel Perry. Can Ava resist?

Since 1798, Sam has been trapped on earth as a dark angel of Satan. Sam must choose if he will lead Ava straight into the devil’s trap or place his immortal existence on the line to keep alive the only girl who has made him feel human again. Sam and Ava are two star-crossed lovers who have great forces attempting to keep them apart, and like Romeo and Juliet, the fate of their souls is dependent on death.

What price is Ava willing to pay for love? What if it means turning over her soul straight into Satan’s hands for the boy of her dreams?

[MMC] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

I really wanted Sam to be the type of boy all of us girls find irresistible. After all, who hasn’t been attracted once in their life to a guy who is “bad” for them? My main heroin, Ava O’Brian, was inspired from a combination of my two younger sister’s personalities.

The concept for the True Intention Series came from my deep-down desire to write a paranormal romance. I love suspense and mystery. What is better than old fashion “good versus evil”? LOL.

[MMC] What have you learned about yourself through your characters?

Nobody is perfect. There was a time in my life when I didn’t believe I was capable (maybe even worthy) of reaching my goals. I missed out on opportunities and made mistakes. I’d like to think I’m a lot wiser now, but I also know I’ll never be perfect. Mistakes are inevitable along the way. But that’s okay because I don’t consider my mistakes a failure; it just brings me one step closer to discovering how to turn my dreams into reality.

[MMC] Which of your characters are you most like?

William, for sure! He is determined and refuses to give up. The more he comes alive in the series, the more I see the resemblance. He must be the guy version of me.  LOL.

[MMC] Why do you think paranormal romances are so popular with readers?  What do you like best about the genre?

I like the “alternate worlds” of paranormal romances. One of the reasons I’ve always loved to read is to get away from all the stressors of reality. I like immersing myself into the characters and their world. Paranormal romances allows us to think outside the box and use our imagination contrary to what we are told is scientifically possible.

[MMC] If you had to pick one book that turned you on to reading, which would it be?

The Sweet Valley High series by Francine Pascal was my absolute favorite! I couldn’t wait until to read the next, and the next.
[MMC] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

I love photography, painting or making something artsy, outdoor adventures, relaxing at the lake, reading a good book, hanging with family and friends, and of course shopping. I have a husband and three young kids under the age of eight, and I enjoy spending quality time with them.

[MMC] Thank you!

Not up give away the book, but I love how Ava has 2 love interests… The guy who is evil, literally, and the guy our parents want us to bring home. Great job!

Sounds like a fun read! And the cover is gorgeous. Noble does really nice covers, and their new YA line is certainly no exception.
