Alyx Harvey is the author of the romantic adventure yarn, Hearts at Stake. This is an entertaining read with vampires, a princess, many assorted weapons, and so many hot guys your head will spin. Alyx cleared up some time to drop by the offices for a quick chat.
Your novel, HEARTS AT STAKE, is a fun, energetic read. How did you come up with the concept for the characters and the story?
I’ve always loved retelling fairy tales and I thought Snow White would work particularly well as a vampire story. The characters themselves sort of strolled onto the stage and let themselves be known. Truthfully, they’re kind of bossy.
I enjoyed the structure of the novel, as both Lucy and Solange narrate the story in alternating chapters. Why did you decide to use that format for the book?
Using first person POV limits you to the action happening to that one person and I really wanted to tell both Solange and Lucy’s story. And it creates instant tension! You have to wait a full chapter to find out what happens every time.
What did you learn about yourself through your characters?
I am snarky. Wait. That’s not news!
What was the most challenging aspect of writing your book?
Keeping track of so many cute brothers and not getting distracted!
What has been the most gratifying aspect of getting your book published?
There’s nothing like the feeling of holding your book in your hands. And I love seeing the cover for the first time. Also, as a long-time reader of Romantic Times, I was absolutely thrilled that Hearts at Stake was a January Top Pick!
Who offered you the most support while you were working on your book?
My friends and family have always been incredibly supportive. My parents never suggested I work in an office like a regular person, my husband brings me food when I’m on a deadline and my oldest friend in the world always wants to read more! I’m so grateful to all of them. Also, my agent Marlene Stringer who read the book and loved it and didn’t let the rather crowded vampire teen fiction genre stop us!
What’s on tap for Drakes in BLOOD FEUD?
Mayhem of course! Girls in corsets, swordfights, first kisses and lots of dogs.
Thanks for chatting with us, Alyx! Now get back to work so we can read more about the Drakes!
If you haven’t read Hearts at Stake, I recommend picking up a copy from your local library or book store. It really is a fun romp. Blood Feud will be in stores June 22nd. You can read more about her books at Alyx’s website by clicking here.
