My Heavenly Hockey Club Vol 2 by Ai Morinaga Manga Review

Title:  My Heavenly Hockey Club Vol 2

The Grand Hockey Club’s existence is threatened!  The student body president gives Izumi an ultimatum – win a match within the next week, or the club will be disbanded!  It seems the more popular tennis club needs the space.  Will the hockey club finally get to play a match or will they be forced to close shop?

This series continues with the silly adventures of the hockey club.  I’m surprised that I am enjoying it so much, because I haven’t liked the other Ai Morinaga series that I have read.  The situations and setting of My Heavenly Hockey Club has really tickled my funny bone, and I can so relate to Hana.  Who doesn’t long for just a few extra  minutes  of sleep?  I think it’s her ability to eat massive quantities of food that has earned her a place in my heart.  Ah, food, glorious food!  I, too, want to sample culinary delights from every geographic region.

The ridiculous scenarios never end, as the team travels to Yamagata to answer a challenge, and to also search for the perfect Sato Nisiki cherry.  The Yamagata team is barely scraping by, forced to steal electricity from other club rooms and finding ingenious uses for duct tape to repair their ratty equipment.  With no club room and no budget, they just want to play hockey.  Moved by their dedication, Izumi is wowed by their thrift and determination.  Even the safety hazard presented by the other team’s rickety equipment doesn’t dampen his enthusiasm to play a match with them.  The financial contrasts between the teams are examined in comedic detail, and this chapter had me laughing at every page.

The team also goes on a diet, as napping and eating and no physical activity can quickly pack on the pounds.  Hana and Izumi are trapped together during a typhoon, and things once again don’t turn out quite the way you would expect.  Hana is driven to distraction in the search of the perfect stomach pillow.  Goofy quests fill the pages, and all of the fast-paced episodes yield new reasons to laugh.

My Heavenly Hockey Club is a fun read.  It’s not trying to be anything other than a high energy comedy, so it’s not bogged down with a complicated plot.  Life just doesn’t get more basic than the pursuit of a nice nap and a tasty meal, and neither does this delightful series.

I have read 1,2 and 3 and it just keeps getting better. It does remind me a great deal of Ooran high host club but trust me you won’t care since it gets so bizarre (bear for a goalie, enough said)and it definetely has its very own style. Great light hearted fun
