After Tokine’s grandmother leaves to try to deal with the Kokuboro problem, and Masamori’s attention turns from Karasumori, Yoshimori, Tokine, and Gen find themselves overwhelmed when the ayakashi stage an attack against the site.  Impossibly outnumbered, things aren’t looking good for our heroes. In a last ditch effort to defend the site, Gen’s willing to sacrifice everything to keep the ayakashi from winning.  Will he lose his humanity in the process?

This has been the best volume so far!  From Yoshimori’s despondent climb to the roof, where Gen offers questionable words of advice, to the climatic battle with the Kokuboro, this book really had me on the edge of my seat.  Despite the frantic action, there was also a little bonding time thrown in, as Yoshimori, at the top of his lungs, tries to offer comforting words to the still conflicted Gen.

Masamori left me disappointed, as he allowed his burgeoning ego and ambition to join the Executive Committee to distract him from ensuring the safety of the Karasumori site.  Nope, instead the big dope diverts his troops, leaving Yoshimori, Tokine, and Gen sitting ducks when the Kokuboro stage their assault on the school grounds.  Even Tokine’s granny decided to book out of town, her absence conveniently coinciding with the arrival of the ayakashi hordes that descend on the site, battling to gain entrance for their ailing princess.

Gen proves once and for all that he’s not a monster, but just a confused, lonely young man.  Thinking himself to be worthless, he’s ready to sacrifice himself for his companions.  As his ayakashi attributes become ever more evident during the battle with Gagin (who’s an awesome flaming horse thing with goat horns), he fears that both Yoshimori and Tokine will view him as a demon.  Ha!  They’re made of sterner stuff, and Yoshimori even gives Gen’s ayakashi form the thumbs up.  He did look cool…
