Mining for Diamonds in the August 2007 Previews

Ah!  It’s Previews time again!  I love flipping through the pages and getting little peeks at upcoming releases.  Who cares if the little peeks usually only consist of cover pics?  I still get giddy at the thought of all of new books I have to look forward to in October.

Orfina Vol 1 by Kitsune Tennouji, CMX – I love fantasy stories, especially ones with a strong female lead.  Girls should be able to wear finely wrought armor and swing swords around too!

Venus in Love Vol 1 by Yuki Nakaji, CMX -  Yeah!  A romance with a slightly older heroine.  Sometimes I get a little tired of the high school romances.  Here, we have a college age lead who has headed off to attend a university, and is living on her own for the first time.  I wonder what kind of trouble she’ll run into?

The Palette of 12 Secret Colors Vol 1 by Nari Kusakawa, CMX – I loved The Recipe for Gertrude, so this title is high on my want list.  I’m not very enamored by Nari Kusakawa’s art, but once the action gets rolling, she told an emotionally gripping tale with Gertrude.  Here’s hoping for more of the same.

Psycho Busters Vol 1 by Akinari Nao & Yuya Aoki, Del Rey – Teens with psychic powers!  I don’t really know much about this one, but the cover looks fun…

Ka Shin Fu by Makoto Tateno, DMP – I love Makoto Tateno!  Her artwork is pretty, and her stories are entertaining.  The Kourenji Family, a wealthy Japanese empire, is looking for an heir, and Karou and Ryuugo are the most likely candidates.  Will their rivalry turn into love?

Garden Dreams by Fumi Yoshinaga, DMP – I have yet to have the pleasure of reading a title by Fumi Yoshinaga, but I think this is going to be the first.  I like the setting of Victorian England, and the cover is beautiful!

Hideyuki Kikuchi’s Vampire Hunter D, adapted by Saiko Takaki, DMP – It has vampires.  It’s set in a bleak, stark world, where pathetic humans are helpless prey to monsters.  It’s the perfect book for Halloween!

King of the Lamp by Takako Shigematsu, Go! Comi – A lecherous king is punished for overloading his harem.  Turned into a genie and sealed away in a lamp, he has to help 1000 girls find love before he can break his curse.  Sounds like it could be cute.

Star Project Chiro Vol 1 by Baek Hye-Kyung, Udon – Udon’s manhwa line is finally showing up for pre-order.  I’m not overly enthusiastic with the entertainment world setting, and the preview I read seemed to skew a bit on the young side, but I’ll give this a go anyway.

Hello, Please!: Very Helpful Super Kawaii Characters from Japan by Matt Alt & Hiroko Yoda, Chronicle Books – I can’t resist.  I must have this book!

S.A Vol 1 by Maki Minami, Viz – This one looks really cute!  Ever since Kei defeated her in a wrestling match, Hikari has vowed to beat him. At everything!

Kekkaishi Vol 11 by Yellow Tanabe, Viz – If you haven’t been following this series, you owe it to yourself to give it a try.  It started off a little slow, but soon hit it’s stride. I love the characters and have really come to care for them, including Masamori, Yoshimori’s pompous brother.  Yeah, Masamori freaking rocks!

Dragon Sword and Wind Child by Noriko Ogiwara, Viz – Wow, it’s a real book, with words and probably hardly any pictures.  I hadn’t read a novel in quite some time, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows reminded me how much fun a book can be, even without pictures.  This fantasy is about a girl who loves the Light, and hates the Dark.  Then she discovers that she’s the reincarnation of the Water Maiden and a princess of the Dark.  Now the Light and the Dark are after her, because she has the power to awaken the legendary Dragon Sword.  I’m in!

Zombie-Loan Vol 1 by Peach-Pit, Yen Press – I’m not sure that I’ll like the weak-spirited Michiru Kita, but she can see almost dead people!  When she sees the mark of their impending deaths on their necks, she’s surprised that two of her classes are still alive.  Then she learns that in exchange for keeping them alive, they have to hunt zombies for the Zombie Loan office.  Zombies are scary – how will Michiru deal with that?

Missing Vol 1: A Story of Kami-Kakushi by Gakuto Coda, TOKYOPOP – Part of their Pop Fiction line, this is a tale of supernatural horror.  Click here for some more information about this series, which is 13 volumes long!
