Review: High Voltage by Karen Marie Moning

Contains Spoilers

Alright. I really wanted to *LOVE* this book. I absolutely adored most of the Fever books so far, and I was so happy this was going to be from Dani’s POV. But… It just… didn’t do as much for me as I hoped. Teeny spoilers ahead.

There was so much time spent in Dani’s head I kind of tried to skim through those chapters. When did Dani/Jada become an angsty tween worried about why her “man” wasn’t calling her. She went back and forth between the angst and the “I’m sexy and strong and amazing.” I wanted more story here though. I liked what KMM did to reignite that, but we needed more about the conflict, and less about the love story. I think we all had a feeling that Ryodan and Dani were going to be “together”, but I was hoping it would be in the background like Barron’s and Mac in most of the Fever books.

And when Ryodan “returns” he’s such a… a… I don’t even know how to put it. All he wants is recognition and reciprocation from Dani. What happened to the strong willed, take no shit characters from the previous books?? The Shazam bit was kind of interesting, but I don’t think it made a lot of sense. Speaking of not making sense, Dani gave Ryodan a reciprocal tattoo, and I didn’t understand how that would work. Right?

Well, hopefully some of the next books will have some more about the nine!! Yes, there is a teeny bit of background on them. ::joy::

About the book:

There is no action without consequence…
Dani O’Malley was nine years old when the delusional, sadistic Rowena transformed her into a ruthless killer. Years later, she’s tough, hardened, yet achingly vulnerable and fiercely compassionate, living alone by her own exacting code. Despite the scars on her body, driven by deeper ones carved into her soul, no one is more committed to protecting Dublin. By day, she ensures the safety of those she rescues, by night she hunts evil, dispensing justice swiftly and without mercy, determined to give those she cares for the peace she has never known.
There is no power without price…
When the Faerie Queen used the dangerously powerful Song of Making to heal the world from the damage done by the Hoar Frost King, catastrophic magic seeped deep into the earth, giving rise to horrifying, unforeseen consequences–and now deadly enemies plot in the darkness, preparing to enslave the human race and unleash an ancient reign of hell on Earth.
There is no future without sacrifice…
With the lethal, immortal Ryodan at her side, armed with the epic Sword of Light, Dani once again battles to save the world but her past comes back to haunt her with a vengeance, demanding an unspeakable price for the power she needs to save the human race and no one—not even Ryodan who’d move the very stars for her—can save her this time…
