Manga Review: Haikyu!! Vol 5 by Haruichi Furudate

Contains Spoilers – Read at your own risk

The inter-high qualifiers have begun! After a frenzy of last minute training, Karasuno is determined to to have a rematch with Nekoma by winning the upcoming tournament. They draw Tokonomi for the first round, and the heat is on! Can they survive to make it to the next round of competition?

Sadly, there will be spoilers. Sorry! The game against Tokonomi takes up about a third of this volume, and it was a fun match! Everyone is down on poor Karasuno because they have been such non-starters for the last few years, calling them the Fallen Champions and the Clipped-wing Crows. Since a few of the team members are still struggling with confidence issues, this doesn’t help their frame of mind. Hinata and Kageyama rally behind the troops, so to speak, and push everyone to be the best they can be. Tokonomi is swiftly defeated, while some of the weapons that Hinata and Kageyama brandish are revealed to some of the other players watching the match.

The second bracket is against Date Tech, a team of monsters. The guys on Date Tech are huge! They make Hinata look like a little mouse. A fast, sneaky mouse, but a mouse none the less. This is a no holds barred slug fest. Both teams flex their strengths, and try to hide their weaknesses. Hinata and Kageyama’s quick set has Date Tech absolutely lose their minds! What a fun match up! Unfortunately, the book ends during the middle of the game, prompting me to hop up on a lazy Sunday afternoon and run, RUN, up to the library to check out every volume of the series that they had on the shelf (which, yes, included #6, but NOT #7). So make sure you have the next volume on hand if you are enjoying this series at all, because you are going to want it read it right away!

The art is impressive, with dramatic panels of leaping, intense players. Hinata at one point even looks like he is flying as he smashes one of the Kageyama’s sets. And the decoy sequence was worthy of a cheer. While I am still not a volleyball fan, I am a big fan of this series.

Grade: 4 stars

About the book:

Shoyo Hinata is out to prove that in volleyball you don’t need to be tall to fly!
Ever since he saw the legendary player known as “the Little Giant” compete at the national volleyball finals, Shoyo Hinata has been aiming to be the best volleyball player ever! He decides to join the team at the high school the Little Giant went to—and then surpass him. Who says you need to be tall to play volleyball when you can jump higher than anyone else?
Having lost all of their practice games against Nekoma, the cracks in Karasuno’s teamwork are more apparent than ever! With Inter-High qualifiers looming over them, Hinata, Kageyama and the rest of the team need to work hard to stand a chance. But with two of the prefecture’s top four schools in their qualifier block, Karasuno’s chances look slim. How will they overcome this challenge when just thinking about their second opponent, Date Tech, makes Karasuno’s ace, Asahi, tremble in fear?
