Interview and Giveaway: Wicked Sexy by Anne Marsh

[Manga Maniac Cafe]  Good morning, Anne!  Describe yourself in five words or less.

[Anne Marsh] Introvert, observer, bookish, loyal, yoga-pant-wearing (you-know-if-I-hyphenated-I-could-totally-get-around-this-five-word-limit-hah!).

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about your book?

[Anne Marsh] WICKED SEXY, my first Harlequin Blaze, is a reunion romance. Sexy Navy rescue swimmer Daeg Ross comes home to Discovery Island, California. He intends to help out a Navy buddy and then leave—but he hasn’t planned on Dani Andrews. Dani is supposed to be on her honeymoon. Instead, she’s back on Discovery Island licking her wounds and running for shelter when she sees Daeg Ross coming her way. Years ago, on this very beach, Dani started something with the special ops aviation rescue swimmer. But she refuses to be tempted by the wickedly hot military hunk again.??Daeg Ross is used to jumping into treacherous waters. But his feelings for relationship-shy Dani are a whole new type of risk. They are volatile—and irresistible. When their lives are threatened by the invading winds and endless rain of a tropical storm, Daeg and Dani are forced to take shelter and ride out a wild night… and things get pretty steamy after that.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Anne Marsh] Bikini shopping—thank you, Victoria’s Secret catalog! One of my guilty pleasures (can I lie and say it’s my only guilty pleasure?) is purchasing way too many bikinis. I’m probably twenty years past when I should have worn a bikini, but the pictures are always so awesome and… hope springs eternal. So there I was, flipping through the catalog, exercising my imagination to the utmost to put myself in one of those itty-bitty suits without causing major trauma to my family on the beach, and I spotted this white crochet bikini. It definitely wasn’t for me—but who was it for? I started thinking and then Dani Andrews, the heroine of WICKED SEXY, came to mind.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

[Anne Marsh] I always enjoy writing the first outline, when I’m learning what happens to my hero and heroine. And I absolutely adore writing “The End” (okay—I’ve never actually written that, but watch out, Harlequin! I owe you book #3 in September and I’m adding that). There are also moments that kind of pop up along the way, like the lawn ornaments that Dani’s grandparents own and the schmexy bits. First kisses are good, too.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What gave you the most trouble with this story?

[Anne Marsh] Writing a book always becomes a joint process at some point and the editors at Harlequin are fabulous (I’d heard that, but I remained politely skeptical until I had some firsthand evidence). They’ll push you, though, and ask you things like “Why can’t your heroine swim?!” (Me: Because I read an article in Time Magazine?) and “Doesn’t your heroine have any backstory?” (Me: Uhhhh…. Would you like me to add some?) and “Don’t cut to black here—we want to join the hero and heroine in bed!” (Me: Oooh! You’re way more adventurous than me!). It certainly helps fill in the holes in the story, but I’m also fairly certain that the point of edits is to make one feel like a sad, sad llama indeed ;)

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had a theme song, what would it be?

[Anne Marsh] Anything from Pirates of the Caribbean! If Johnny Depp knocked on my front door tomorrow, I’d be off and away with him.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing you won’t leave home without.

[Anne Marsh] A book. Yes. Seriously. Or, if it’s allergy season, I’m going to have to prioritize and make it my inhaler. Or beg you for two things because I learned the hard way as a child whose father was an avid birder that one NEVER leaves the house without a book. Even if it’s supposed to be a five minute trip to the store. My dad would pull over whenever he saw a bird and, if it was a good one (who knows what a “life bird “ is? I do!) we’d be waiting thirty, sixty, ninety minutes for him to start the car again. Having a book to read then was a Godsend.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name three things on your desk right now.

[Anne Marsh] A Siamese cat. Lorelei James’s CORRALLED. A half-empty bowl of Cheetos (which said cat has apparently licked, which makes them all his).

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you could trade places with anyone for just one day, who would you be?

[Anne Marsh] Can I be an opera singer? I adore singing and I’m really, really bad at it (plus, I seriously lack the chest). I’ve always wanted to sing the lead in something delicious like EUGENE ONEGIN.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are some books that you enjoyed recently?

[Anne Marsh] I’m working on my Goodreads challenge! I just read Amy Plum’s AFTER THE END and Susan Cokal’s KINGDOM OF LITTLE WOUNDS. Both were fantastic, although I’m still trying to remember that I don’t read anything even vaguely post-apocalyptic Right Before Bed. Bad idea! I’ve also been fortunate enough to beta-read for several amazing authors, including Zoe York (BEYOND LOVE AND HATE) and Cora Seton (COWBOY RESCUES A BRIDE). I pretend I’m helping them out by reading their books early, but I’m really all about getting my hands on their books!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Anne Marsh] I’d like to be traveling to exotic places like Bora Bora and snorkeling my heart out, but you’ll usually find me with my kids or gardening. Much to my husband’s dismay, I adore collecting daylilies (and made him drive six minivan-loads from House A to House B the last time we moved—he’s still complaining about the spiders).

Author Info

After ten years of graduate school and too many degrees, Anne Marsh escaped to become a technical writer. When not planted firmly in front of the laptop translating Engineer into English, Anne enjoys gardening, running (even if it’s just to the 7-11 for slurpees), and reading books curled up with her kids. The best part of writing romance, however, is finally being able to answer the question: “So… what do you do with a PhD in Slavic Languages and Literatures?” She lives in Northern California with her husband, two kids and four cats.

I think everything is wicked sexy about a man in uniform. It’s the way he walks and acts, and his confidence.
