Interview with Sarah Barrie, Author of Deadly Secrets

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Good morning, Sarah! Describe yourself in five words or less.

[Sarah Barrie] Happy, creative, determined.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Deadly Secrets?

[Sarah Barrie] Deadly Secrets is about surviving an unseen evil and finding love against almost insurmountable odds. It’s about the strength, courage and determination of one woman to save her life, and about one extraordinary man’s resolve to see her win.

Born and bred on the land, Jordan Windcroft is as tough and beautiful as the country she lives on. And just as untamed. Her life revolves around running her property almost single-handedly on next to no money, and she’s determined to succeed.

She has no living family, just a close group of friends in her small hometown of Whitewater Creek. When one of those friends is threatened by a dangerous enemy, she is forced to cover up the truth of a tragic accident, finding herself on drugs and alcohol charges and four years of probation.

But there’s an end to her problems in sight. Her probation period is almost up, and if she can just make the cattle sale, there’s a chance she can pull herself out of serious debt and keep her precious farm. The last thing she needs is for Reid Easton to walk into town.

Detective Senior Sergeant Reid Easton drives into Whitewater Creek on a mission to wrap up a three year drug investigation; his only lead, Jordan Windcroft. The attraction between the two is immediate, but Reid is undercover and Jordan has a secret she can’t risk him discovering. Neither is willing to jeopardise their cause, at least not before a few sparks have flown.

While her future hangs in the balance, on the mountain surrounding her home a predator lies in wait. And when he makes his presence known, Jordan will find herself in a desperate struggle for survival.

[Manga Maniac Cafe]  Can you share your favorite scene?

[Sarah Barrie] I don’t really have one favourite… but I like scenes that involve the early tension between the my hero and heroine. Such as…

He stepped in, grabbed hold of the rake and used her grip on it to tug her forward. By the time she thought to let go they were inches apart, his hands on either side of her face. His eyes bored into hers with an intensity that made her knees weak. ‘Have I got your attention?’

Attention? She could barely breathe. Her heartbeat kicked up a couple of notch’s, her entire body turned to jelly and a charge started firing through her body and just refused to stop circulating. He was holding her quite gently but she knew if she tried to move those hands would be vice-like. She was so overwhelmed by the sensations he’d stirred in her, it took her a moment to remember he was waiting for an answer. Eventually she managed a breathless, ‘Yes.’

‘Then listen. If you do anything Hal can legally pin on you — just the slightest misdemeanour — I won’t be able to protect you from the courts, do you understand that?’

Protect her? ‘Yes…okay.’

‘If he’s trying to get a rise out of you — if that’s his plan — by doing nothing you win.’ His gaze moved to her lips, hovered there while the tension surrounding them all but sizzled in the air. Something stirred in his eyes and a muscle jumped in his jaw. Then he abruptly let her go and walked away, before pausing in the doorway to look over his shoulder. ‘Stay out of trouble.’

Jordan just stood there until she heard his car start, then she dropped where she was in the middle of the stable, put her head in her hands, and spent several moments pulling herself back together.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What gave you the most trouble with the story?

[Sarah Barrie] The research. I had to find police and police detectives to speak to.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name three things on your desk right now.

[Sarah Barrie] Computer, coffee, a tourist brochure for New Zealand.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What’s your favorite snack when you’re working on a deadline?

[Sarah Barrie] Predictably… chocolate.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you could trade places with anyone for just one day, who would you be?

[Sarah Barrie] Angelina Jolie, because… Brad Pitt.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] You have been granted the use of one superpower for one week.  Which power would you choose, and what would you do with it?

[Sarah Barrie] The doing-everything-on-fast-forward (Like Superman) and I’d do everything with it. Mostly…

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are some books that you enjoyed recently?

[Sarah Barrie] The Killing Place, Tess Gerritson, Boundary Lines, Nora Roberts.

Whoever said small towns have no secrets didn’t know about this one…

Born and bred on the land, Jordan Windcroft is tough. She’s had to be. Her life revolves around running her property almost single-handedly on next to no money, and waiting out her four years of probation — a rap that she took for one of her closest friends.

But there’s an end to her problems in sight. Jordan’s probation period is almost up, and if she can just make the cattle sale, there’s a chance she can pull herself out of more than ten years of serious debt and keep her precious farm. The last thing she needs is for Reid Easton to walk into town.

Detective Senior Sergeant Reid Easton drives into Whitewater Creek on a mission to wrap up a three-year drug investigation; his only lead, Jordan Windcroft. The attraction between the two is immediate, but Reid is undercover and Jordan has a secret she can’t risk him discovering. Neither will jeopardise their cause, not for something as transitory as love.
