Interview with Emma Cane, Author of Valentine Valley Series and Giveaway!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Good morning, Emma! Describe yourself in five words or less.

[Emma Cane] Wife, mom, author, dog-obsessed, skating-fan (okay, that last hyphen was incorrect…)

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about your books?

[Emma Cane] THE COWBOY OF VALENTINE VALLEY, which came out in February, is the third book in my Valentine Valley series—but you definitely don’t need to read them in any order. Josh Thalberg, a cowboy and leather craftsman, thinks his world is dandy—until he meets reformed Hollywood bad girl, Whitney Winslow, who’s opening a branch of her upscale lingerie store, Leather and Lace, in Valentine Valley and thinks leather necklaces created by Josh will wow her customers. She keeps pushing her advice about promoting his work—until a publicity photo she insisted he take goes viral and Josh becomes the most desired cowboy in America.

A PROMISE AT BLUEBELL HILL will be published in March. Secret Service agent Travis Beaumont is supposed to be preparing for the wedding of the president’s son in Valentine Valley, but flower shop owner and activist Monica Shaw has a secret that might jeopardize his assignment. In her heyday, she was an activist. It seems the widows of the Widows’ Boardinghouse think a presidential wedding is the perfect time for another protest—putting Monica squarely between them and hunky Travis, who has a job to do.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concepts and the characters for the stories?

[Emma Cane] For COWBOY, I think the viral-photo idea happened because of my creation of the heroine, Whitney Winslow. She’s really wealthy—think: the Hiltons—and she went through a bad year of rebellion against her parents’ indifference by being your typical wealthy bad girl: getting photographed everywhere, drinking too much and partying too hard. A particular photo made her infamous, and it really began her career in lingerie (hint, hint). So I decided Josh needed his own famous photo…

For BLUEBELL, Monica is a free spirit, a floral designer, and I thought an ex-Marine would be the perfect foil. The idea of the president coming to Valentine Valley came up in a brainstorming session with my critique group—hence, a Secret Service agent. But how could they have conflict? She had to be doing something to interfere with his job—or the widows did, anyway, with their protest. Monica is trying to defuse the situation and help both sides, while staying true to her beliefs.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What did you enjoy most about writing these books?

[Emma Cane] My favorite part of the whole writing process is brainstorming, where the world of the story seems full of possibilities and fun. I share this part with my writing buddies and my husband, so many great conversations starting with “What if…?” I’m always amazed at how one idea can spark a roomful of them, leading to just the right one.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What gave you the most trouble with these stories?

[Emma Cane] Probably the self-doubt. It doesn’t matter that I’ve written thirty-some books (as Emma Cane, Gayle Callen, and Julia Latham). There’s a place in the middle of a manuscript where you just don’t feel like it’s working; you wonder if you’ve lost all sense of the characters’ motivation. I have to push myself to just keep going, to stop second-guessing, reminding myself that I feel this way with every book. Miraculously, it works out—I guess I really have been training my subconscious to write a story after 15 years in the business. 😉

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had a theme song, what would it be?

[Emma Cane] “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.” Corny—but so true!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name one thing you won’t leave home without.

[Emma Cane] A lot of people probably say this, but it’s my cell phone. I like to be able to call my husband and kids, to find a map of where I’m going, to search for something, to look at all my lists. And I make a lot of lists…

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name three things on your desk right now.

[Emma Cane] My laptop, index cards for plotting, and a logbook to record the work I do each day.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you could trade places with anyone for just one day, who would you be?

[Emma Cane] Julie Andrews, before the node surgery ruined her singing. She had the most beautiful voice—oh, to be able to sing like that. And to perform! I’ve done some community theater, and I loved it. Wish I had more time…

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are some books that you enjoyed recently?

[Emma Cane] Kris Fletcher’s NOW YOU SEE ME takes place in Comeback Cove (love the name), a little Canadian resort town where Lydia is sick of being known as the Widow Brewster, and is ready for fun when bad boy J.T. comes back to town. Right now I’m rereading the HARRY POTTER series—my goodness, J.K. Rowling can write. I discover and appreciate different things every time I read them. I also recently read a non-fiction title, PHYSICS OF THE FUTURE, where the author, a physicist himself, interviewed hundreds of scientists about what the next 100 years will be like.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Emma Cane] I really enjoy being outside, hiking or snowshoeing with my husband and our two dogs, Apollo and Uma. I love to travel, although I don’t get to do it nearly as often as I’d like. My daughter did a semester abroad in London last fall, and I was able to visit her and tour the country for a week. Such great research—and fun, too. I also like to sing, read, watch TV, and crochet, but not at the same time. 😉

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Emma Cane] I’m active on Facebook and Twitter, and I also have a website with contact info, including a sign-up for my newsletter. Here are the links:
