Interview with Lauren Roy, Author of Night Owls and Giveaway!

Please welcome Lauren Roy to the virtual offices this morning!  She brought along a copy of her brand new book, Night Owls,  for one of you to win!  Please check back later today for my review of Night Owls.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in five words or less.

[Lauren] Writer, bookseller, gamer, geek.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about Night Owls?

[Lauren] Val just wants to spend her unlife running a late-night bookstore in a sleepy college town and forget her past as a monster hunter. Unfortunately for her, a girl named Elly leads the monsters to her door.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

[Lauren] I worked in an independent bookstore through high school and college, which comes through a lot with Val and Chaz.

The Creeps took a while to come together in my head — for a while, they were just threatening, faceless figures, until I had a weird dream about these jackal-like creatures wreaking havoc on Boston’s Green Line trains. Combine that with a story snippet of a girl who stole a book from monsters, and what they were and what they were after finally clicked.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

[Lauren] I had a lot of fun with Chaz’ voice. He’s a bit of a smartass, but that gets him into trouble on occasion.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What gave you the most trouble with this story?

[Lauren] Sometimes it was tough getting into Elly’s head. She plays things close to the vest because she’s  both a little paranoid and afraid of getting hurt. Figuring out how she’d react to certain situations, what she’d say, what she’d only think, could be challenging.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had a theme song, what would it be?

[Lauren] Seanan McGuire’s “My Story Is Not Done.’

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What’s one thing you won’t leave home without?

[Lauren] A book. If I have down time, I’m reading.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name three things on your desk right now.

[Lauren] A cup of coffee, red pens, a cat.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you could trade places with anyone for just one day, who would you be?

[Lauren] Probably one of my cats. Napping in the sun all day? Yes please!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are some books that you enjoyed recently?

[Lauren] Chuck Wendig’s THE CORMORANT and NK Jemisin’s THE KILLING MOON are both excellent reads. For my day job, I also get to read books that aren’t on shelves yet. MR Carey’s THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS is one to look out for this summer.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Lauren] I’m a gamer — board games, video games, RPGs, you name it. I’m also learning to play guitar (poorly) and bake bread (not poorly).

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Lauren] I’m on Twitter as @falconesse, and I blog intermittently at http://falconesse.com . Come say hello!

Thank you for hosting me!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Thank you!

About the book:

Night Owls bookstore is the one spot on campus open late enough to help out even the most practiced slacker. The employees’ penchant for fighting the evil creatures of the night is just a perk…

Valerie McTeague’s business model is simple: provide the students of Edgewood College with a late-night study haven and stay as far away as possible from the underworld conflicts of her vampire brethren. She’s experienced that life, and the price she paid was far too high for her to ever want to return.

Elly Garrett hasn’t known any life except that of fighting the supernatural beings known as Creeps or Jackals. But she always had her mentor and foster father by her side—until he gave his life protecting a book that the Creeps desperately want to get their hands on.

When the book gets stashed at Night Owls for safekeeping, those Val holds nearest and dearest are put in mortal peril. Now Val and Elly will have to team up, along with a mismatched crew of humans, vampires, and lesbian succubi, to stop the Jackals from getting their claws on the book and unleashing unnamed horrors…

I love the kickass girls on the cover. That is what initially drew me to the story. The blurb sealed the deal. This sounds awesome. A monster hunting book geek? You can’t get much better! And the dream that brought out the monsters? Sounds like she has been in my head while I sleep….. I have the weirdest dreams ever! Thank you so much for the giveaway!
