Interview with Caroline Storer, Author of The Roman

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Describe yourself in five words or less.

[Caroline Storer] 50 going on 25.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Can you tell us a little about The Roman?

[Caroline Storer] Famous charioteer, Aulus Epidius Marsallas wants revenge against Justina Philipus – the only woman he ever loved, but who then betrayed him by becoming his uncle’s mistress. Forced to meet Marsallas for the first time in six years, Justina is shocked at the changes she sees in him. Gone is the carefree youth she once loved, now replaced by a hard muscular stranger. But there is no denying the attraction that still flows between them, and when his uncle dies Marsallas offers sculptress Justina a challenge – a bronze statue of himself, and his four horse chariot, to be displayed at the Circus Maximus. Justina knows that this commission is just what she needs to make a name for herself, and give her the freedom she covets, so she accepts Marsallas’s challenge. However, Justina is unprepared when Marsallas states one further condition – she must become his mistress. But Justina has a secret, she’s still a virgin, she just hasn’t told Marsallas yet…

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

[Caroline Storer] The research! I love reading history, and I love reading romance. So a historical romance is my idea of heaven.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What gave you the most trouble with this story?

[Caroline Storer] Layering in enough emotion between the hero and the heroine, and trying to rush to “The End” without tying up all the loose ends!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you had a theme song, what would it be?

[Caroline Storer] “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None The Richer. It was the song that my husband and I associate with our courtship.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What’s one thing you won’t leave home without?

[Caroline Storer] A coat. No matter what time of the year it is – we always seem to get rain here in Wales!

[Manga Maniac Cafe] Name three things on your desk right now.

[Caroline Storer] My huge pile of notebooks (I love stationery!) An empty (dog) picture frame (I can’t quite make myself put a picture of my beloved dog who died last year in it yet.) A woolen monkey (he came free in a packet of Teabags – but he is cute!)

[Manga Maniac Cafe] If you could trade places with anyone for just one day, who would you be?

[Caroline Storer] The Duchess of Cambridge. She’s adored wherever she goes and looks good all the time. (She used to live on the island where I live (Anglesey), and I did see her once when she went shopping in our local store. It was strange to see her pushing a shopping trolley, closely followed by two of her personal security people!)

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What are some books that you enjoyed recently?

[Caroline Storer] No Duke Goes Unpunished – Sarah MacLean

The Last Wicked Scoundrel – Lorraine Heath

The Passionate Love of a Rake – Jane Lark

Beyond Grace’s Rainbow – Carmel Harrington

To Sin with a Viking – Michelle Willingham

To Seduce a Sinner – Elizabeth Hoyt

[Manga Maniac Cafe] What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

[Caroline Storer] Reading (a lot!) I also like walking my dog, and spending time with my husband – we like to go to the gym and then relax by taking a sauna and steam afterwards.

[Manga Maniac Cafe] How can readers connect with you?

[Caroline Storer] I have a Blog –

I’m on Twitter –

I also have a profile up on the HarperImpulse website – link = link =

About the book:

The one woman he ever loved was the one woman who betrayed him.

And now, the Roman will have his revenge…

Marsallas and Justina were young, beautiful and desperately in love once, until a tragic betrayal tore them apart.

Six years have passed since that day and Marsallas has since thrown himself into the deadly world of chariot racing, gaining fortune, fame, and a salacious reputation throughout Rome. His bed is kept warm by a different woman each night, but his heart remains iced over as the memory of Justina’s betrayal continues to haunts him.

The last thing he expects is to see her again, but when she steps back into his life he sees a chance to avenge his broken heart.

But beneath the hurt, an attraction so intense still burns between the two, and as their fates begin to intertwine once more, their determination to resist one another starts to falter…
